IIT Madras Expands Vidya Shakti to 10,000 Rural Students

IIT Madras's Vidya Shakti Initiative Transforms Rural Education with Digital Tools

For countless students in rural Tamil Nadu, resolving doubts in subjects like mathematics or science after school hours has long been a challenge, often requiring a wait until the next day's class. To address this gap, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has been actively developing its Vidya Shakti free digital education initiative. This program provides online instruction in science, mathematics, and English to students after regular school hours, leveraging technology to enhance learning accessibility.

Expansion Plans and Innovative Features

Nagarajan Pichumani, project director of Vidya Shakti at IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation, highlights the program's growing popularity. "The initiative has gained such traction that we aim to extend it to an additional 10,000 students by establishing 100 more rural interaction centers in the upcoming academic year," he states. These live online sessions are designed to help students clarify doubts in real-time, with teachers utilizing virtual reality to explain complex topics, making abstract concepts more tangible and engaging.

AI-Driven Assessments and Future Goals

In the coming year, the focus will shift towards enhancing writing skills through innovative assessment methods. "Teachers will dictate questions, and students will write their responses. These answers will be photographed and evaluated using artificial intelligence tools," explains Pichiman. The results will then be forwarded to coordinators at the centers to monitor performance and tailor support to improve student outcomes. This data-driven approach aims to personalize learning and track progress effectively.

Digital Platforms and Scalability

IIT Madras employs digital platforms like EduReach, an advanced edtech program developed by the Wadhwani School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (WSAI) specifically for Vidya Shakti. Currently serving seven lakh students nationwide, the program has ambitious targets. "Our goal is to reach 11 lakh children across 11,000 schools in 10 states," adds Pichiman. The platform incorporates features such as instant quiz assessments and digital question rendering, while a performance dashboard provides administrators with insights into state-level, district-level, and student-level trends, fostering data-driven governance in educational systems.

Ongoing Innovations and Workshops

Nandan Sudarsanam, project coordinator for EduReach, notes that several advanced capabilities are under development. "We are working on teacher and learner feedback systems, interactive interfaces, and AI-powered tools like automated question generation and real-time evaluation integrated into educational videos," he says. These innovations are crafted to boost usability and scalability, assisting both educators and learners in navigating digital education with greater efficiency. To further promote adoption, IIT Madras plans to conduct a day-long workshop to familiarize educators, administrators, and policy stakeholders with the platform's features, ensuring widespread implementation and impact.
