IIT Madras Unveils Online BS Degree in Management and Data Science
In a significant move to enhance professional education, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has launched a new online Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in management and data science. This interdisciplinary undergraduate programme is specifically tailored for working professionals and students, aiming to equip them with advanced skills in business decision-making, quantitative thinking, and data-driven problem-solving. The launch event, held on Saturday, highlighted the programme's potential to transform the corporate landscape by merging technology and business expertise.
Bridging the Gap Between Business and Technology
During the launch, IIT Madras director V Kamakoti emphasized the critical need for future managers to be proficient in both technology and data. He stated, "The course will give exposure to data-driven decision making, which will be beneficial even for senior managers and policymakers." This programme is designed to address the growing demand for professionals who can navigate complex datasets and translate them into actionable business strategies.
Gangapriya Chakraverti, India site head and managing director of Ford Motor Company, echoed this sentiment, noting, "On one side, we have data scientists who understand algorithms but lack business acumen. On the other, seasoned managers with extensive experience sometimes feel intimidated by data. These graduates will serve as a bridge, capable of interpreting complex datasets and formulating boardroom strategies."
Accessibility and Flexibility for Learners
The programme is open to anyone who has completed Class XII or an equivalent qualification, including diploma holders, making it accessible to a broad audience. Professor Prathap Haridoss, dean (academic courses) at IIT Madras, explained, "Learners can pursue the programme as a standalone degree, alongside another academic programme, or while being employed." This flexibility is a key feature, allowing individuals to balance education with professional or personal commitments.
Rajiv C Lochan, managing director and chief executive officer of Sundaram Finance Limited, highlighted the opportunity this degree provides, stating, "This programme gives a large number of people the chance to earn a degree from IIT Madras, enhancing their career prospects."
Innovative Delivery and Support Systems
The course will be delivered through recorded lectures by IIT Madras faculty, enabling learners to study at their own pace. Additionally, the programme includes live interactions, case discussions, and continuous academic support via online forums. This blended approach ensures a comprehensive learning experience that combines self-paced study with interactive elements to foster deeper understanding and practical application.
This new BS degree marks the fourth online degree offered by IIT Madras, reinforcing the institute's commitment to expanding educational access through digital platforms.
