IIT Madras Vidyashakti Showcases Digital Tamil Learning at Kashi Tamil Sangamam 4.0
IIT Madras Vidyashakti Boosts Tamil Learning at Kashi Expo

A groundbreaking exhibition at the ongoing Kashi Tamil Sangamam 4.0 in Varanasi is capturing significant attention. At stall number 26 on Namo Ghat, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is showcasing its innovative education project, 'Vidyashakti'. Aligned with the event's theme of 'Tamil Karkalam' or 'Learn Tamil', the initiative is redefining how a classical language can be taught in the modern age.

Digital Tools Make Tamil Learning Interactive and Fun

The Vidyashakti model demonstrates a powerful shift in pedagogy. It moves away from rote learning by integrating digital simulations, gaming modules, quizzes, and interactive content. This approach makes mastering Tamil simple, engaging, and highly accessible. The initiative proves that technology can breathe new life into language education, making it relevant for younger generations.

Launched in 2021 under the guidance of Dr. Shiva from IIT Madras, Vidyashakti initially focused on making Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning captivating. It has been successfully implemented in 10 districts of Uttar Pradesh. A key component of its work involves conducting live Tamil classes daily from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM in 650 schools. Students learn foundational vocabulary, correct pronunciation, everyday communication, and script recognition through this enjoyable digital format.

Extending Tamil Learning Beyond the Classroom

True to the vision of 'Tamil Karkalam', Vidyashakti's mission extends far beyond school students. The project holds special Tamil sessions every morning from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM for diverse groups including sanitary workers, NCC cadets, and other students. This practical approach tailors the language to specific needs:

  • Sanitation workers are trained in workplace-specific conversations to aid their daily professional interactions.
  • NCC cadets learn Tamil vocabulary related to commands and parade drills, enhancing their discipline and communication.
  • Students benefit from structured lessons using flow-learning charts.

This strategy successfully positions Tamil not merely as an academic subject but as a practical tool for daily life, communication, and professional advancement.

National and International Reach with a Focus on Empowerment

The footprint of Vidyashakti is both wide and deep. Today, its programs span across 7,210 villages in India and have made a significant impact in 5,000 villages in Sri Lanka. The launch in Uttar Pradesh was ceremoniously inaugurated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The initiative has been a consistent participant since the very first edition of the Kashi Tamil Sangamam, highlighting its enduring commitment to cultural and educational synergy.

One of its most notable sub-programs is the Digital Didi initiative. This effort focuses on empowering women, youth, first-generation college students, single mothers, and eldest daughters across the nation by training them in essential digital skills. Participants contribute just one hour of digital work per day and earn Rs. 2,000 per month, creating a direct and impactful link between digital literacy and sustainable livelihood.

The team from IIT Madras behind Vidyashakti has expressed profound gratitude for the platform provided at the Kashi Tamil Sangamam. They thanked the Prime Minister, the KTS organizers, and the committee for the opportunity to display this integrated model that combines Tamil language learning, STEM education, and digital empowerment on the sacred land of Kashi. The exhibition stands as a testament to how traditional knowledge and cutting-edge technology can unite to foster learning and opportunity.
