Jharkhand's First Commercial Pilot License Course Takes Off at Dumka Airport
In a significant move to boost local aviation talent, the Jharkhand Flying Institute (JFI) has launched its inaugural Commercial Pilot License (CPL) course at the flight training operational base in Dumka airport. This facility was inaugurated by Chief Minister Hemant Soren in November last year, marking a new era for aviation education in the state.
Empowering Local Youth with Aviation Skills
The initiative is strategically designed to equip local youths with commercial aviation skills, thereby reducing their reliance on training institutes outside Jharkhand. By offering this course within the state, JFI aims to foster homegrown talent and provide accessible career opportunities in the booming aviation sector.
Captain S P Sinha, Managing Director of JFI, emphasized the program's novelty during an announcement on Tuesday. He noted that while the institute previously ran a glider pilot licence programme, this CPL course is a first. "This is the first time we are launching a CPL course, providing an opportunity to the youths of Jharkhand and other states as well, to pursue a career in the commercial aviation sector," he stated.
Course Details and Application Process
The application procedure for the CPL course commenced on April 16 and will continue until April 30. Selected candidates will undergo training at a flying training organisation approved by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for approximately 9 to 12 months. This comprehensive program includes hands-on flying experience on the ZLIN 143-L aircraft, modern ground school instruction, and simulator training.
Out of the 15 available seats, the reservation breakdown is as follows:
- 7 seats are unreserved
- 4 seats are reserved for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribe
- 1 seat each is reserved for candidates from the Scheduled Caste, Backward Classes, and Economically Weaker Section
Eligibility Criteria and Selection Process
Prospective candidates must meet specific academic requirements to apply. They must have already passed at least four out of seven papers from the DGCA-prescribed syllabus, which includes subjects such as aviation meteorology, air regulation, aircraft and engines, technical specification, technical performance, and radio telephonic.
JFI will directly enrol trainees who have passed at least four of these subjects. The selection process involves scrutinizing applications based on DGCA paper results, followed by a psychometric or pilot aptitude test to ensure candidates are well-suited for a career in aviation.
This initiative not only enhances skill development but also aligns with broader goals of regional economic growth and self-reliance in specialized fields. By bringing pilot training closer to home, Jharkhand is taking a proactive step towards nurturing a new generation of aviation professionals.
