JNU Appeals to IGL for PNG Supply Relaxation to Avert Hostel Mess Crisis
In a significant move, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has formally written to Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL), urging the relaxation of restrictions on piped natural gas (PNG) supply. The university has highlighted that the current caps could severely disrupt mess operations across its hostels, impacting the daily meals of thousands of resident students, wardens, and staff members.
Strain on Kitchen Operations Amid Supply Caps
The core issue revolves around a supply cap that limits PNG to 80% of the average consumption from the previous six months for commercial users. JNU's letter emphasizes that this restriction is placing immense strain on kitchen operations in hostels. It states, "resident students, wardens and hostel staff depend on uninterrupted PNG supply for preparation of daily meals, and any restriction could affect the cooking and distribution of food to a large number of students." The university has appealed to IGL to consider either relaxing these caps or granting exemptions specifically for hostel messes to ensure smooth functioning.
Growing Student Discontent Over Menu Cuts
This appeal comes against a backdrop of escalating discontent among students regarding menu cuts and reduced food options in campus canteens. The National Students' Union of India (NSUI) has amplified these concerns by organizing a Taali-Thaali Bajao Abhiyaan across Delhi University campuses. They argue that the ongoing LPG crunch is adversely affecting student accommodations, further fueling frustrations over food quality and availability.
The situation underscores broader challenges in managing essential services in educational institutions. JNU's proactive step aims to prevent potential disruptions that could exacerbate student grievances, emphasizing the critical need for reliable energy supplies in academic settings.
