Karnataka Government Announces Major Skill Development Initiative
The Karnataka government has unveiled plans to establish two state-of-the-art Youth Impact Centres in Mysuru and Kalaburgi districts, with a significant investment of Rs 16 crore. This ambitious project, announced in the 2025-26 state budget, aims to address the critical skills gap among graduates and provide substantial employment opportunities in emerging technological fields.
Bridging the Industry-Academia Divide
Despite lakhs of students completing degree courses across various disciplines annually, a substantial majority lack the practical skills required by modern industries. To bridge this persistent gap, the state government has initiated the Youth Impact Centre project under the Karnataka-Quality Upgradation for Employment and Skill Transformation (K-QUEST) framework. The primary objective is to equip young graduates with industry-relevant expertise, particularly in high-demand areas such as electrical automation and smart system management.
Comprehensive Training for Regional Development
The Mysuru Youth Impact Centre, strategically located in the Hebbal Industrial area, will specifically cater to youths from Southern and Coastal Karnataka districts. Meanwhile, the Kalaburgi centre will focus on training individuals from Kalyana Karnataka, Kittur Karnataka, and North Karnataka regions. Each centre is projected to train approximately 2,000 youths every year, creating a robust pipeline of skilled professionals for the industrial sector.
Collaborative Implementation Structure
The Department of District Industries and Commerce, in partnership with the Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, Livelihood and Skill Development Commission, will oversee the selection process. Graduated youths from every district will be carefully chosen to participate in the intensive training programs at the Schneider Electric Youth Impact Centres. Joint Director of Industries and Commerce, Manjula, emphasized that this initiative targets future technologies, including electrical systems, automation, smart design, and various other advanced technological competencies.
Industry Endorsement and Economic Impact
Suresh Kumar Jain, Vice President of the Mysuru Industries Association, has publicly appreciated the government's forward-thinking initiative. He highlighted that establishing such a facility in Mysuru will not only transform technical skills across multiple technologies but also generate substantial employment opportunities for local youth. This project represents a significant step toward enhancing Karnataka's industrial competitiveness and fostering sustainable economic growth through skill development.
