Kerala High Court Judge Inaugurates Fisheries School's Golden Jubilee Celebrations

In Kochi, Justice Devan Ramachandran of the Kerala High Court emphasized the integral connection between all residents of Kerala and the marine ecosystem, stating that the fisheries sector is a cornerstone of the state's economy and makes a substantial contribution to the nation's GDP. He made these remarks during the inauguration of the curtain-raiser programme for the golden jubilee celebrations of the School of Industrial Fisheries (SIF) at Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) on Thursday.

Historical Significance and Industry Impact

Justice Ramachandran unveiled the official logo for the golden jubilee celebrations, marking the beginning of a yearlong series of events. The MSc course in industrial fisheries, introduced in 1976, was a pioneering initiative designed to address the specific needs of the seafood industry by providing qualified manpower and helping the sector navigate its challenges. B Madhusoodana Kurup, former vice-chancellor of Kufos, alumnus, and former director of SIF, highlighted that this programme was the first of its kind to meet industry requirements through a scientific approach.

The course curriculum was structured around five key areas: capture fisheries, aquaculture, economics, management, and food processing. According to Kurup, approximately 50% of SIF graduates have entered the industry, while the remaining half have pursued careers in fisheries research and government institutions, demonstrating the school's significant impact on both the private and public sectors.

Golden Jubilee Programme and Future Initiatives

Under the theme Fifty Years of Excellence in Fisheries Education, Research, and Industry Partnership, the golden jubilee celebrations will feature a diverse array of academic, professional, cultural, outreach, and commemorative events. These activities aim to showcase the school's achievements and foster continued collaboration with the industry.

As part of its forward-looking plans, SIF will establish a Golden Jubilee Endowment Fund to support long-term sustainability. The school also intends to strengthen its infrastructure, including upgrading laboratories and implementing smart classrooms. Additionally, SIF will create centres of excellence in priority fisheries sectors and institutionalise annual lectures, scholarships, fellowships, and awards to promote ongoing innovation and education in the field.
