Maharashtra Minister Demands Action and Compensation After Student's Tragic Death
In a significant development, Maharashtra's Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Chandrakant Patil, has formally written to Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharne, urging immediate action regarding the tragic death of a student at the College of Agriculture (CoA). The minister has called for compensation to be provided to the bereaved family in accordance with government regulations, alongside a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
Details of the Incident and Subsequent Protests
The unfortunate incident occurred approximately a month ago when Chaitanya Kundlik, a student pursuing agri-business management, suffered a severe electric shock from a water cooler installed in the hostel mess. Despite receiving medical treatment, Kundlik succumbed to his injuries on March 24 at a private hospital in Pune. The student's death sparked outrage among his peers, leading to a protest on the CoA campus the following day, where students voiced their frustration against perceived administrative negligence.
Political Intervention and Demands
The issue gained political traction when BJP Yuva Morcha district president Vaibhav Solankar brought the matter to the attention of Minister Chandrakant Patil, who also serves as an MLA from Pune, in a letter dated April 21. This intervention prompted a response from the minister. Solankar emphasized that the agriculture college falls under the jurisdiction of the agriculture ministry, thereby making Minister Bharne directly responsible for incidents at the institute.
"The student belonged to an extremely poor family, and his death was a direct result of the college's negligence," Solankar stated. "We are demanding that those responsible be punished and that the family receives compensation of Rs 1 crore. If our demands are not met, we plan to stage a protest in front of Bharne's residence in Indapur on May 1."
College's Response and Financial Support
In response to the incident, CoA associate dean Mahanand Mane revealed that the Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth in Rahuri, which oversees the college, had established an inquiry committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding Kundlik's death. However, Mane noted that the college has yet to receive any directives from the university regarding the committee's findings or recommendations.
"The college, along with students, staff, and alumni, collectively covered the hospital expenses for Kundlik, who was on ventilator support," Mane explained. "Additionally, we provided Rs 13.8 lakh to the family as financial assistance during this difficult time."
