Nursing Students Stage Protest at Ranchi University Over Exam Delays
Hundreds of undergraduate nursing students from various colleges staged a significant protest on Monday outside the administrative building of Ranchi University (RU). The demonstration was organized against persistent delays in conducting their semester examinations, which students claim are jeopardizing their academic progress and future career prospects.
University Operations Disrupted by Sustained Agitation
The protest, led by the National Students Union of India (NSUI) Ranchi city unit, forced the university's offices to remain closed throughout the day. Employees were compelled to stay on campus as the agitators blocked the main gates until late evening. The nursing students marched inside the RU campus, demanding that employees vacate their offices before closure.
During the protest, students shouted slogans emphasizing their demands for immediate examination scheduling. The atmosphere remained tense as university authorities struggled to address the growing discontent among the student body.
Student Voices Highlight Academic and Career Concerns
A student from the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences' nursing college, who requested anonymity, revealed the severity of the situation. "I belong to the 2022-26 batch and should have completed seven semesters by now," the student explained. "However, Ranchi University has only conducted examinations for two semesters. If this continues, I will exceed the maximum age limit for government jobs by the time I graduate."
The student specifically mentioned that the age limit for the nursing officer recruitment common eligibility test exam conducted at the national level is 30 years. Additionally, only one semester examination has been held for the 2023-27 session, further compounding the delays.
Another student colleague noted that previous examinations were conducted only after similar protests. "We submitted a memorandum regarding our demands two months ago, but no action was taken," the student stated, expressing frustration over the university's lack of response.
University Administration's Response and Student Demands
NSUI city wing president Satish Kesri detailed the students' attempts to engage with university authorities. "We repeatedly called the RU vice chancellor, but he did not answer our calls," Kesri said. "We then issued an ultimatum, demanding that the VC speak with us within an hour. When our demand was ignored, we had no choice but to close the university offices."
In response to the protests, Ranchi University issued date sheets for the third semester examination of the 2022-26 batch and the second semester of the 2023-27 batch. However, students continued their agitation, demanding comprehensive examination schedules for all pending semesters.
RU spokesperson Smriti Singh addressed the situation, stating, "We are making every effort to conduct the examinations as soon as possible. Our proctor, Mukund Chandra, spent considerable time with the agitators, attempting to convince them and address their concerns."
Broader Implications for Higher Education
The protest underscores significant challenges within the higher education system, particularly regarding timely examination scheduling and administrative responsiveness. Students' anxieties about exceeding age limits for government employment highlight the real-world consequences of academic delays.
The involvement of the NSUI indicates organized student activism aimed at holding educational institutions accountable. As the situation develops, stakeholders await further actions from Ranchi University to resolve the examination backlog and restore normal academic operations.
