Patiala's 12th Book Fair and Literary Festival Inaugurated at Punjabi University
The 12th Book Fair and Literary Festival officially began at Punjabi University in Patiala on Monday, marking a significant cultural event that brings together publishers, writers, scholars, and avid readers from across the region. The festival, organized by the university's publication bureau and department of Punjabi, was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Jagdeep Singh, who emphasized the profound role of such gatherings in fostering connections between readers and knowledge.
Emphasis on Printed Books and Punjabi Heritage
In his inaugural address, Vice-Chancellor Jagdeep Singh stated that book fairs are not merely exhibitions but vital spaces that help build a living relationship between readers and knowledge. He highlighted that despite the rapid advancements of the digital age, printed books continue to hold a unique value and play a key role in nurturing reading habits among students and researchers. Singh further reinforced the university's commitment to promoting the Punjabi language, literature, and culture, noting that this mission remains central to their academic and community efforts.
Inaugural Ceremony and Distinguished Guests
The event commenced with a spiritual touch as Bhai Kamaljit Singh, the hazuri ragi of Darbar Sahib in Amritsar, performed Gurbani kirtan, setting a reverent tone for the festival. Author and translator Jang Bahadur Goyal delivered the keynote address, sharing insights on literary contributions. The ceremony was graced by Sahitya Akademi awardee Professor Waryam Singh Sandhu, who attended as the chief guest, and Raghbir Singh Sirjana, who served as the guest of honour, adding prestige to the occasion.
Extensive Participation and Diverse Offerings
The festival boasts an impressive array of 111 stalls, including 89 dedicated to books, with participation from publishers and booksellers spanning Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. Punjabi University's publication bureau has set up four stalls showcasing over 800 titles in Punjabi, Hindi, and English, reflecting the linguistic diversity and rich literary heritage of the region. On the opening day, students and researchers turned up in large numbers, demonstrating keen interest and engagement with the event.

The festival is set to continue over the coming days, featuring a series of academic sessions and literary discussions designed to deepen intellectual exchange and celebrate literary arts.
