PAU Golden Jubilee Reunion Celebrates Alumni Journey from Villages to Global Leadership

Ludhiana witnessed a remarkable gathering this week as the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) hosted a massive Golden Jubilee alumni meet, celebrating the extraordinary journey of graduates from rural villages to the highest positions in global bureaucracy. The event overflowed with laughter, nostalgia, and heartfelt reminiscences as multiple generations of alumni returned to their alma mater.

Constellation of Graduates Returns to Campus

The reunion attracted a "constellation" of graduates from the 1966, 1976, and 1986 batches, creating a vibrant atmosphere on campus. For many attendees, this homecoming served as a powerful reminder of their humble beginnings. Mewa Singh Panag, holding his original student card from 1972, vividly recalled how PAU acted as a social catapult for him and his classmates.

"I and many of my batchmates had only ever worn pajamas before entering these gates," Panag shared emotionally. "Coming from the villages, many wore pants for the first time only after joining the university. This place propelled us to high ranks across the world, transforming our lives completely."

The Legendary Randhawa Legacy

A recurring theme throughout the evening was the legendary compassion of former Vice-Chancellor Dr. MS Randhawa. Alumni shared numerous fond anecdotes about his forgiving attitude toward student mischief, painting a picture of a leader who prioritized understanding over punishment.

Panag recounted a particularly memorable incident where students once caused a power cut to delay an examination. "Dr. Randhawa told us he knew exactly who did it, but because we had come to him with a request, he postponed the exam anyway," he revealed. Another touching story involved Randhawa noticing students taking shortcuts across campus lawns and responding by building new pathways along their tracks rather than punishing them for trespassing.

Global Homecoming and Family Traditions

The meet drew alumni from across the globe, demonstrating PAU's international reach and influence. Paramjit Singh Dosanjh traveled all the way from California to attend, while husband-and-wife duo Jasvir Singh Mangat and Balwinder Kaur Mangat highlighted how the university had become a family tradition, with multiple generations of their relatives having studied at PAU.

Notable attendees included:

  • Col Jasjit Singh Gill, renowned environmentalist
  • Kahan Singh Pannu, former IAS officer
  • Dr. Kirpal Singh Aulakh, former vice-chancellor
  • Dr. Jasbir Singh Bains, former agriculture director (2016-2019)

Call for Agricultural Policy Reform

While nostalgia dominated the gathering, it was balanced with a serious call to action regarding India's agricultural policies. Dr. Jasbir Singh Bains delivered a compelling argument that many current agricultural policies, including diversification efforts, often fail because they are designed by bureaucrats without rural backgrounds.

"Nobody understands agriculture better than those from an agricultural background," Bains asserted. "Our alumni must support excellent students to ensure those with dirt under their fingernails are the ones making the decisions in politics and bureaucracy. We need policymakers who truly understand the ground realities of farming."

Commemorating Six Decades of Agricultural Excellence

Current Vice-Chancellor Satbir Singh Gosal announced significant initiatives to strengthen the alumni association financially, with plans to better support current students. To mark the university's 60-year bond with farmers, a special four-volume set of coffee table books titled PAU's Colossal Feat was released during the event.

These comprehensive volumes chronicle the institution's pivotal role in:

  1. The Green Revolution that transformed Indian agriculture
  2. Skill development programs for rural communities
  3. Agricultural research and innovation
  4. Creating global leaders from rural backgrounds

The Golden Jubilee celebration served not only as a nostalgic homecoming but as a powerful testament to PAU's enduring legacy in shaping agricultural leaders and transforming rural lives across generations.
