PAU Faculty and Students Secure Multiple National Honors at Prestigious Agricultural Conferences
Faculty members and students from the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics at the College of Agriculture, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in Ludhiana, have achieved remarkable success by securing several national-level awards at two significant agricultural conferences held recently. These honors recognize exceptional contributions to oilseeds research and climate-resilient agriculture, highlighting PAU's leadership in advancing India's agricultural sector.
National Oilseeds Conference Recognizes Outstanding Contributions
The National Oilseeds Conference, organized under the theme "Edible Oil Security for Atmanirbhar Bharat," took place at the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in New Delhi. This event brought together leading experts to address critical issues in oilseed production and research.
Lifetime Achievement Awards for Senior Researchers
Two distinguished PAU faculty members were honored with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for their decades of dedication to rapeseed-mustard research. Dr Virender Sardana, former Principal Agronomist and Incharge of Oilseeds, and Dr Pushp Sharma, Principal Physiologist for Oilseeds and Head of the Botany Department, received this accolade in recognition of their transformative work that has significantly advanced the field.
SRMR Fellow Awards for Research Excellence
In addition, Dr Sarwan Kumar, Principal Entomologist for Oilseeds, and Dr Chhaya Atri, Senior Oilseed Breeder, were conferred the SRMR Fellow Award by the Society for Rapeseed-Mustard Research (SRMR) based in Bharatpur. This award acknowledges their substantial contributions to research and development in rapeseed-mustard crops, further cementing PAU's reputation in specialized agricultural sciences.
Young Researchers Shine with Multiple Accolades
The conference also celebrated the achievements of PAU's emerging researchers, demonstrating the university's strong pipeline of talent.
- Dr Kusum Rana, a former PhD student from the Oilseeds section, was awarded the Young Scientist Award for her innovative research contributions.
- In the oral presentation category, former PhD students Dr Sandeep Kaur and Dr Simarjeet Kaur both won Best Oral Presentation Awards for their compelling research presentations.
- The poster category saw Dr Priyanka Upadhayay receive the Best PhD Thesis Award, while Sonam was honored with the Best MSc Thesis Award, showcasing the depth of academic excellence at PAU.
International Conference on Climate-Resilient Agriculture
PAU students further demonstrated their research prowess at the International Conference on "Climate-Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Development: Innovations and Solutions," hosted by the Institute of Agricultural Sciences at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi.
Oral Presentation Excellence
PhD students Ananya Mahanta and Shivani Upadhyay both secured Best Oral Presentation Awards for their groundbreaking research. Mahanta presented her work on evaluating heat stress resilience and processing quality in T. sphaerococcum, a critical step toward developing climate-smart wheat varieties. Upadhyay showcased her research on developing pre-harvest sprouting tolerance and rust-resistant wheat germplasm using advanced gene pyramiding techniques, offering promising solutions for sustainable wheat production.
Poster Presentation Success
In a remarkable achievement, six PhD students from Punjab Agricultural University won Best Poster Awards at the conference. This collective success underscores PAU's comprehensive strength in agricultural research and its commitment to addressing global challenges like climate change through innovative scientific approaches.
These awards not only highlight the individual accomplishments of PAU's faculty and students but also reinforce the university's pivotal role in advancing agricultural science in India. By focusing on critical areas such as oilseed security and climate resilience, PAU is contributing directly to national goals of self-reliance and sustainable development in the agricultural sector.
