Purulia Medical College Student Brutally Assaulted by Seniors
A shocking case of ragging and physical assault has emerged from Deben Mahata Government Medical College and Hospital in Purulia, West Bengal. A first-year student has filed a formal complaint against approximately 15 senior students for a brutal, premeditated attack that left him with multiple injuries.
Violent Midnight Ambush on Hostel Campus
The victim, a resident of Domkal in Murshidabad, alleged that he had been subjected to sustained harassment by two senior students—Rishabh Kumar Singh from the second year and Ayan Kumar Bagchi from the fourth year—for several days prior to the assault. The situation escalated dramatically around midnight on Monday when, according to the complaint, 14 to 15 students, acting on the instructions of Singh and Bagchi, ambushed the first-year student on the boys' hostel campus.
The attackers reportedly thrashed him mercilessly, resulting in severe bruises and welts across his back. The assault was so violent that the victim required immediate medical attention, which he sought the following morning.
Swift Institutional Response and Committee Action
Following the assault, the victim formally submitted a detailed complaint to the college's anti-ragging committee. His parents, deeply concerned, traveled to Purulia and arrived on Friday to support their son. In response to the serious allegations, the college administration convened a meeting of the anti-ragging committee on Friday.
The meeting was held in the presence of both the victim and the accused parties. "After reviewing the complaint and the evidence presented, the committee found the allegations to be substantiated. Consequently, it was decided to suspend the two primary accused," stated Sukamal Bishayi, the MSVP (Medical Superintendent cum Vice Principal) of the college.
Disciplinary Measures: Suspension and Hostel Eviction
The disciplinary action taken by the college authorities was decisive. Rishabh Kumar Singh and Ayan Kumar Bagchi were not only suspended from the institution but were also ordered to immediately vacate the college hostel. This move underscores the administration's zero-tolerance policy towards ragging and campus violence.
The case highlights the persistent issue of ragging in educational institutions, particularly in hostels, and the critical importance of robust anti-ragging mechanisms. The swift action by Deben Mahata Govt Medical College's committee serves as a reminder of the legal and institutional consequences for such misconduct.
