In a significant move towards inclusive education, the Telangana government has announced concrete steps to make higher education accessible for visually challenged students. State Minister for SC, ST, and Persons with Disabilities Welfare, Adluri Laxman Kumar, declared that a Government Order (GO) will be issued shortly to ensure the availability of Braille textbooks at intermediate and degree college levels.
Honouring Louis Braille's Legacy with Action
The announcement was made on Sunday, January 7, during the observance of the 217th birth anniversary of Louis Braille at the department's office in Malakpet, Hyderabad. Minister Laxman Kumar paid floral tributes to the statue of the visionary, crediting him for transforming blindness from a limitation into an opportunity. The minister described Braille as not just an individual but a powerful idea and a movement that illuminated society.
Following discussions with department officials, the minister assured that the process to facilitate uninterrupted access to education is already underway. "Steps are being taken to make Braille textbooks available at intermediate and degree college levels," he stated, emphasizing the government's commitment.
Holistic Support for Persons with Disabilities
Minister Laxman Kumar outlined a broader agenda for empowerment, affirming that all issues within his administrative scope would be addressed promptly. Matters requiring higher intervention would be escalated to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy with full commitment for resolution.
The government's positive stance extends to critical areas of employment and dignity:
- Employment and Reservations: The state remains positive on issues relating to employment, reservations, and job security for persons with disabilities.
- Public Transport Access: During the event, the minister spoke directly to Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar regarding difficulties in public transport. A proposal for free bus travel across Telangana for persons with disabilities will be discussed at the CM's level soon.
- Staffing and Grievances: Issues concerning teaching and non-teaching staff, job security, and cadre strength will be tabled in forthcoming board meetings. Furthermore, meetings with disability rights organizations will be organized in the presence of officials to address grievances.
A Landmark Step in Inclusive Communication
Marking a first for the state, Minister Laxman Kumar released Telangana's inaugural New Year calendar printed in Braille. This innovative calendar is designed for dual use by both persons with visual impairment and the general public, symbolizing a stride towards truly inclusive communication and awareness.
The minister firmly reiterated that persons with disabilities are empowered citizens, entitled to live with dignity and have equal opportunities. The series of initiatives announced signal a proactive approach by the Telangana government in building an accessible and equitable environment for all.
