Vice President Radhakrishnan Commemorates St Berchmans College Centennial in Kottayam

Vice President C P Radhakrishnan participated in the valedictory ceremony for the centenary celebrations of St Berchmans College in Changanassery, Kottayam, on Saturday. This marked his third official visit to Kerala since assuming office, which he described as particularly special. The Vice-President highlighted the state's deep cultural identity, noting that "Kerala has become Keralam," a phrase reflecting the region's pride and heritage.

A Century of Silent Contribution to Nation-Building

In his address, Vice President Radhakrishnan characterized the 100-year-old institution as far more than just a campus of classrooms and corridors. He emphasized that for an entire century, St Berchmans College has quietly yet consistently contributed to the process of nation-building. During the colonial era, the historic college served as a vital center of intellectual awakening, fostering critical thought and resilience among its students.

The Vice-President stated that the college has stood as a guiding light of knowledge and character, shaping not only individual minds but also the nation as a whole. Reflecting on its enduring legacy, he pointed out that countless alumni have carried the institution's influence across India and around the world.

Notable Alumni and Institutional Impact

Vice President Radhakrishnan specifically mentioned several distinguished former students, including the late actor Prem Nazir and former chief ministers Vasudevan Nair and Oommen Chandy. He remarked that producing two chief ministers represents one of the college's greatest contributions to the development of Kerala, underscoring its role in nurturing leadership and public service.

The College Motto: Charity as True Nobility

Referring to the college motto, Caritas Vera Nobilitas (charity is true nobility), the Vice-President elaborated on its profound meaning. He underlined that true nobility does not stem from birth or wealth but from the spirit of giving and compassion. Radhakrishnan explained that charity extends beyond monetary donations; it can manifest as a kind word, emotional support, dedicated time, sincere effort, shared knowledge, or valuable guidance.

He advised the students, "Living for oneself is not bad, but living only for oneself is bad," urging them to give back to society and keep the college's motto in mind wherever their paths may lead.

Charging the Next Generation for the Second Century

Addressing the current student body, Vice President Radhakrishnan declared, "You are the second century of this college. The next 100 years will be written by your ideas, courage and commitment." He encouraged them to dream big, work hard, and remain firmly rooted in their values. Concluding his speech, he expressed confidence that the centenary marks not the end of a 100-year journey but the beginning of a new era of even greater glory. "Let the next century shine brighter than the last," he proclaimed.

Inauguration of New Centers and Dignitaries Present

On this momentous occasion, the Vice-President also inaugurated the Berchmans Centre for Emerging Technologies and the Dr K M Abraham Centre for Energy and Environment, signaling the college's forward-looking approach to education and research.
