A government school in the remote village of Balanja, Belthangady is preparing for a significant milestone as it approaches its 75th anniversary with a completely transformed campus, thanks to generous support from a successful alumnus.
Historic Institution Gets Major Facelift
The Govt Upgraded Higher Primary School in Balanja, which has served the rural community for 75 years, is undergoing comprehensive renovations ahead of its diamond jubilee celebrations scheduled for December 13 and 14. The transformation has been made possible through a substantial donation of Rs 15 lakh from former student Ashwath Hegde, who has become a successful entrepreneur.
According to Chandrashekhar PK, former Balanja gram panchayat vice-president and president of the Amrit Mahotsav Committee, the school was originally established with the vision of making education accessible to all children in the region. "The initiatives are allowing local students to access English education at the government school campus," Chandrashekar emphasized, highlighting the institution's ongoing commitment to its founding principles.
Comprehensive Infrastructure Upgrades
The renovation work encompasses multiple aspects of the school's infrastructure. Classrooms are being upgraded with tiled flooring, while the entrance features new interlocked pavement. The school auditorium has received tiling improvements, and additional enhancements include a renovated teachers' office, a welcoming arch at the entrance, and the construction of a new flagpole.
These development activities are being coordinated by the Amrit Mahotsav Committee with support from local leaders including Suresh Shetty Kurelya and members of the Balanja Education Trust led by Manohar Balanja. The Umamaheshwara Youth Association has also contributed to the renovation efforts.
Growing Educational Hub for Rural Students
The school currently serves approximately 149 students across different levels. About 12 years ago, the institution expanded to include a high school section, and it has now introduced kindergarten classes for LKG and UKG with 47 young learners. The teaching staff consists of six teachers for the primary section and seven for the high school.
The infrastructure upgrades are expected to make the school more attractive to rural families seeking quality education for their children. By improving facilities and maintaining its government school status, the institution continues to fulfill its original mission while adapting to contemporary educational needs.
As preparations intensify for the December celebrations, the school community looks forward to honoring its rich history while showcasing the new facilities that will benefit future generations of students from this remote village in Belthangady.
