Professor at Ahmedabad College Suspended Over Alleged Inappropriate Conduct with Student
A professor at PTC College, also known as Sheth CN Training College, located within the Sheth CN Vidyalaya campus in Ambawadi, Ahmedabad, has been suspended following serious allegations of inappropriate physical conduct with a first-year female student during an examination. The incident has sparked an official investigation and raised concerns about institutional response to such complaints.
Details of the Alleged Incident and Initial Response
The alleged misconduct occurred on March 20, when the student was taking her exam. According to reports, the accused professor held the student's hand and engaged in behavior deemed inappropriate, causing significant distress to the student. After the incident, the student informed her parents, who subsequently filed a formal complaint with the college authorities.
However, the college administration allegedly failed to take any action for four to five days following the complaint. This delay prompted the student's parents to escalate the matter to the District Education Officer's (DEO) office, seeking immediate intervention and accountability.
DEO Intervention and College Actions
In response to the complaint, the DEO office acted swiftly by issuing a notice to the college management and principal. The notice, dated for a hearing on March 30, required them to appear in person and submit a detailed inquiry report. It also demanded clarification on key aspects, including the timeline of the incident, when the complaint was first lodged, and reasons for the administration's perceived negligence in addressing the issue.
Following the DEO's directive, the college management suspended the accused professor and announced the formation of an internal inquiry committee to thoroughly investigate the allegations. In an official statement, the management confirmed that a written complaint has now been obtained from the student and forwarded to the DEO office for further review.
Statements from College and DEO Officials
College director Vaishali Shah provided context, stating, "The incident took place on March 20, but since the student made a written complaint narrating the incident in detail on Friday, we suspended the faculty member immediately. The teacher has been with the institute for the last 20 years." This highlights the sudden nature of the action taken after the formal complaint was received.
DEO Rohit Chaudhary emphasized the seriousness of the situation, asserting that such incidents will not be tolerated under any circumstances. He added, "Strict action will be taken based on the findings, and accountability will be fixed for any lapses, including administrative negligence." This underscores the commitment to ensuring justice and preventing future occurrences through rigorous oversight.
Broader Implications and Ongoing Investigation
The case has drawn attention to issues of safety and accountability in educational institutions, particularly regarding the handling of student complaints. The internal inquiry committee is expected to delve into the specifics of the incident, while the DEO's involvement ensures external scrutiny to uphold ethical standards.
As the investigation progresses, stakeholders await further updates on the outcomes and any additional measures implemented to safeguard students. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of prompt and transparent responses to allegations of misconduct in academic settings.
