Andhra University Chancellor Calls for Politics-Free Campus Environment
During the combined 91st and 92nd convocation ceremony of Andhra University held on Wednesday, Governor Dr S Abdul Nazeer, who serves as the university's chancellor, delivered a strong message advocating for a campus free from political interference. Presiding over the event in Visakhapatnam, Dr Nazeer explicitly stated that politics should be kept away from the academic premises to maintain an environment conducive to learning and growth.
Strict Measures for Hostel Accommodation and Student Conduct
In his convocation address, the chancellor emphasized that only registered students should be permitted to reside in university hostels, and non-students must not be allowed to stay. He further directed that all students must provide a formal undertaking to the chancellor's office, committing to abide by this regulation and other institutional guidelines. This move aims to ensure proper discipline and security within campus residential facilities.
Responding to these directives, Andhra University Vice-Chancellor Prof GP Rajasekhar assured complete compliance. "We pledge not to have politics on the campus. We will also ensure that non-residents are not accommodated, and we are committed to maintaining excellence in all our academic and administrative functions," Prof Rajasekhar stated firmly during the ceremony.
Celebrating a Century of Academic Excellence and Legacy
Governor Dr Nazeer took the opportunity to highlight Andhra University's remarkable 100-year legacy, recalling its establishment in 1926 to serve the educational aspirations of the Telugu community within the Madras Province. He paid tribute to the institution's foundational figures including CR Reddy, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Dr VS Krishna, Dr TR Sheshadri, and Prof Humayun Kabir.
The chancellor proudly noted that AU has produced distinguished alumni who have achieved global recognition, including Nobel laureate Dr CV Raman and eminent statistician Prof CR Rao. "I urge students to approach life pragmatically, like a realist adjusting sails against the wind. Graduates should elevate themselves, cultivate confidence, and honour their alma mater's legacy by making meaningful contributions to society," Dr Nazeer advised the graduating class.
Honorary Doctorates and Research Awards Presented
The convocation ceremony featured the conferral of honorary doctorates to two notable individuals. Purnachandra Rao Saggurthi, vice-chairman of Bank of America and an AU alumnus, received the honor alongside Dr Thallavajjula Patanjali Sastry, a renowned Telugu author, environmentalist, and archaeologist. Their contributions to their respective fields were celebrated as exemplary models for students.
Additionally, Best Research Awards were presented to Prof P Jagadeeshwara Rao from the Department of Geology and Prof CNV Satyanarayana Reddy from the Department of Civil Engineering, recognizing their outstanding scholarly work and dedication to advancing knowledge.
Vision for Global Competitiveness and Sustainable Development
Following his acceptance of the honorary degree, Dr Saggurthi addressed the gathering, highlighting India's rapid growth within the global economic system and its potential to become the world's third-largest economic power. He encouraged the youth to develop adaptable skills to navigate changing global conditions, noting Bank of America's strong international position with a projected net profit of $30.5 billion in 2025.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajasekhar added that as Andhra University transitions into its second century, it should strive to achieve commendable progress in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He emphasized moving forward with knowledge, integrity, innovation, and a strong sense of responsibility towards society, ensuring the institution continues to serve as a beacon of excellence in higher education.
