From Humble Beginnings to Thriving Learning Hub
The Basdila Community Library has emerged as a powerful symbol of opportunity and change. In just four months of operation, this initiative has grown into a vibrant learning center with an impressive collection of 1,061 books and 317 registered members. Most participants are between the ages of 5 and 25, representing the village's youth who are eager to expand their horizons.
For many young residents, this library represents their first real access to a world beyond traditional textbooks and classroom walls. The facility provides a gateway to diverse knowledge and perspectives that were previously unavailable in this rural setting.
Inspiration from Mumbai to Village Roots
The story begins with Suhail Khan, an engineer from Mumbai University who maintained strong connections to his ancestral village. Every summer, Khan would return to Basdila, finding peace in his rural roots while gradually recognizing the educational limitations facing local youth.
"The village always gave me peace," Khan recalls, "but as I grew older, I began to see the missing opportunities, exposure, and access to good learning resources."
While building his career in the private sector, Khan encountered Jatin Lalit Singh, a young changemaker from Hardoi who had initiated a community library movement during the COVID-19 pandemic. Singh's pioneering work in Bansa village of Mallawan had not only transformed local learning spaces but had also earned recognition from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a 'Mann Ki Baat' address.
Collaborative Vision for Community Empowerment
"Jatin started his library in 2020 when schools were shut," Khan explained, highlighting how the pandemic had revealed critical gaps in educational access. Inspired by Singh's vision of providing every village with access to books, Khan reached out to collaborate, and together they brought the library concept to life in Basdila in 2025.
For Singh, the Basdila library represents a shared mission realized through his Aruna Mithlesh foundation. "Suhail belonged to the village, moved out for studies and work, but never forgot his roots," Singh noted. "This library is his way of giving back, and together we built it for the community."
Comprehensive Resources and Growing Impact
Today, the Basdila Community Library offers far more than just books. The facility now includes:
- Three computers for digital learning
- A dedicated toy library for younger children
- A diverse collection of reading materials across subjects
- A safe, welcoming space where children gather to read, learn, and ask questions
Mariya, the library's BEd-qualified librarian, observes significant changes in the young participants. "Children are developing reading habits, curiosity, and confidence," she reports. "Parents see hope — a belief that their children can aim higher and achieve more than previous generations."
A Space of Hope and Future Possibilities
Khan emphasizes that the library represents something much greater than a collection of books. "This is not just a library," he asserts. "It is a space of hope and opportunity. If even a few children find direction here, discover new passions, or develop skills that change their life trajectories, it will all be worth the effort."
