Belandur's Historic School Approaches 100-Year Landmark with Renewed Vision
In the remote village of Belandur, nestled within Kadaba taluk of Mangaluru district, a significant educational milestone is on the horizon. The DK ZP Government Higher Primary School, established nearly a century ago, is meticulously preparing to celebrate its centenary year. This institution, which began its journey in 1927 with the dedicated support of village head Srinivas Rayaru, has been a cornerstone of learning for generations across Belandur and its surrounding rural communities.
A Legacy of Community-Driven Education
From its humble origins as the Belandur Elementary School, officially launched on September 14, 1927, this educational hub has evolved significantly. It gained formal recognition from the education department as a higher primary school on July 15, 1953, enabling local children to pursue their education without venturing far from home. Today, the school offers classes from grades 1 to 7 and currently enrolls 69 students, a testament to its enduring role in the region.
Community participation was instrumental from the outset, especially during an era when educational opportunities and transport facilities were severely limited in this area. The school's growth has been deeply intertwined with the collective efforts of villagers, creating a legacy that spans multiple generations.
Centenary Celebrations and Strategic Planning
The upcoming centenary festivities are being orchestrated through a collaborative effort between the school's alumni association and the school development and monitoring committee. According to Supreeth Kumar Jain, president of the alumni association, preparations are actively underway, with celebrations likely scheduled for later this year or early 2027. A pivotal meeting of alumni and education supporters will soon be convened to establish a centenary committee and outline comprehensive development plans.
Jain emphasized that the event aims not only to honor the school's rich history but also to implement forward-looking projects designed to fortify its future and enhance student enrollment. Historically, the school, situated beside the Puttur-Subrahmanya state highway, once boasted over 600 students. However, admissions have dwindled over the years due to the emergence of several private and government schools in nearby areas.
Shifting Focus from Infrastructure to Sustainability
Initially, the alumni proposed constructing a new classroom block as part of the centenary roadmap. However, after thorough discussions, it became evident that infrastructure improvements alone might not suffice to attract more students. Consequently, the strategy has pivoted toward creating a sustainable source of income for the school.
In a innovative move, the alumni association is now planning to plant 700 areca saplings on the school campus. This initiative builds upon the existing coconut trees and is projected to generate long-term financial support for the institution. By fostering a self-sustaining model, the school aims to secure its operational stability and appeal to future generations of students.
This centenary marks not just a celebration of past achievements but a renewed commitment to educational excellence and community resilience in Belandur.
