CBSE Reiterates Class I Admission Age Policy with Flexibility

In a significant clarification, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has reaffirmed that the minimum age for admission to Class I remains six years, strictly adhering to the guidelines set forth by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Right to Education (RTE) Act. This announcement was made during a district-level meeting organized by the Council of CBSE Schools Kerala (CCSK) in Kochi, where CBSE officials addressed school managements and principals to provide clear directives on admission norms.

Flexibility in Age Criteria for Admissions

Officials, including CBSE controller of examination Sanyam Bhardwaj and joint secretary (affiliation) Jayaprakash Chaturvedi, emphasized that while the standard age is six years, a relaxation of up to three months before or after attaining this age will be permitted. This flexibility is designed to accommodate practical challenges arising from variations in academic calendars and admission practices across different states, including Kerala. Stakeholders have welcomed this clarification, noting it will help streamline admission processes and reduce confusion among parents and educational institutions.

No Upper Age Limit for Board Examinations

In addition to the admission guidelines, CBSE officials clarified that there is no upper age limit for students appearing in Class X and XII board examinations. Eligibility for these exams will be determined according to the prevailing norms of the respective state governments. This approach underscores CBSE's commitment to an inclusive and flexible educational framework, where age is not considered the sole determinant of academic performance.

Sanyam Bhardwaj stated, "Currently, no strict age limit is prescribed.
