CBSE Mandates Composite Skill Labs in All Schools to Boost Practical Learning
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a major educational reform, making it compulsory for all its affiliated schools to establish Composite Skill Labs. This significant initiative is designed to strengthen skill-based and experiential learning, directly aligning with the objectives outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023.
Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice
According to CBSE, skill and vocational education are becoming integral components of school curricula across the nation. The introduction of these specialized labs aims to move education beyond traditional textbook-based learning, equipping students with real-world competencies that are essential for their future careers and professional development.
The Composite Skill Labs are specifically designed to bridge the critical gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, while simultaneously promoting activity-based and multidisciplinary learning approaches. Through hands-on experience with tools, equipment, and experimental setups, students will gain a deeper, more comprehensive understanding of subjects while developing tangible practical skills.
Infrastructure Requirements and Implementation Timeline
CBSE has outlined clear and specific infrastructure requirements for establishing these labs. Schools must create a Composite Skill Lab covering at least 600 square feet to accommodate students from Classes 6 through 12. Alternatively, educational institutions have the option to establish two separate labs—one dedicated to Classes 6 to 10 and another for Classes 11 and 12—with each facility requiring a minimum area of 400 square feet.
These labs must be properly equipped with all necessary tools, machinery, and experimental setups to effectively support various skill-based subjects and practical learning modules. The board has made it mandatory for newly affiliated schools to have these labs fully operational from the outset.
For existing schools, CBSE has provided a reasonable implementation timeline, requiring compliance with these new standards by August 22, 2027. The educational board has strongly urged all schools to begin planning and implementing these setups effectively to enhance the overall quality, relevance, and practicality of education delivered to students.
