CBSE Mandates AI and Computational Thinking Training for Teachers from 2026-27
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially designated "Computational Thinking (CT) and Understanding Artificial Intelligence (AI)" as the core training theme for the academic session 2026–27. This strategic move is a direct implementation of the guidelines outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023. It represents a significant effort to integrate cutting-edge technological concepts into the school education curriculum, with a strong emphasis on comprehensive teacher training.
New Curriculum for Classes 3 to 8
A major academic innovation has been introduced by CBSE with the launch of a specialized course titled "Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence," which will be taught from Class 3 to Class 8, commencing in the 2026-27 academic year. The curriculum is designed to enhance fundamental competencies such as logical reasoning, problem-solving abilities, and pattern recognition skills. Furthermore, it aims to familiarize students with the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence, ensuring they develop a balanced understanding of technology's role in society.
Teacher Training Anchored Around Seven Key Themes
CBSE has developed a detailed training module to ensure the successful rollout of this initiative. The training will cover essential sub-topics, including:

- Inter-disciplinary approaches

- Ethical considerations
The Board is particularly focused on ensuring that teachers learn to integrate these topics seamlessly into various disciplines, such as Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and languages, rather than treating AI as an isolated subject. District Workshops and School-Level Activities Planned
As part of the implementation strategy, CBSE has instructed schools to organize district-level deliberations and workshops on CT and AI. These sessions will be conducted as one-day offline events, concentrating on sharing best practices and enhancing teacher capacity. Schools are also encouraged to collaborate through Sahodaya School Complexes or institutional groups to maximize outreach and effectiveness.
Participation in these workshops will be counted towards Continuous Professional Development (CPD) hours, with mandatory record-keeping required. Selected presentations from these sessions may be shortlisted for national-level evaluation, with top entries potentially showcased at future National Teachers Conferences, providing recognition and motivation for educators.
Expert-Led Sessions and Digital Learning to Supplement Training
In addition to workshops, CBSE has proposed expert-led talks to be facilitated by designated lead schools. These sessions may be organized in either online or offline formats and will involve both internal and external experts to provide diverse perspectives and insights.
The Board has also emphasized the utilization of digital learning resources, including educational broadcasts on the DD PM e-Vidya Channel CBSE 15, to support ongoing teacher training and student engagement. This digital component ensures accessibility and continuity in learning, especially in remote or resource-constrained areas.
Regional Orientation Programmes Through Centres of Excellence
CBSE's Centres of Excellence (CoEs) will conduct regional workshops and orientation programmes as part of the broader training plan. Teachers can participate through an online registration process, which may involve a prescribed fee, and will receive CPD credits upon completion. The schedule for these programmes is expected to be announced shortly, allowing educators to plan their professional development accordingly.
Focus on Integration, Skills, and Responsible AI Use
According to CBSE, this initiative is intended to create a nurturing environment where computational thinking and AI can be seamlessly incorporated into daily teaching processes.
