CBSE Directs Schools to Establish Composite Skill Labs for Enhanced Vocational Training
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a directive requiring all affiliated schools to establish Composite Skill Labs. This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen skill-based education, aligning with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023, which mandate vocational learning as an essential component of schooling.
Infrastructure Requirements and Lab Structure
According to Circular No. Skill-75/2024, schools must set up either one Composite Skill Lab measuring 600 square feet for students from Classes VI to XII, or two separate labs of 400 square feet each. In the two-lab model, one facility is designated for Classes VI to X, and the other for Classes XI to XII. These labs are designed to provide hands-on, activity-based learning spaces across multiple skill sectors, ensuring accessibility, safety standards, and adaptability to accommodate diverse vocational subjects and student needs.
Timeframe for Compliance and Affiliation Criteria
It is compulsory for all schools applying for new affiliation to establish fully equipped Composite Skill Labs as part of the affiliation process. Existing affiliated schools have been granted a three-year deadline from the issuance of the circular, with compliance required by August 22, 2027. During this period, schools must install appropriate equipment and machinery to meet the standards set by CBSE.
Bridging Theory and Practice
This step aims to build practical capabilities among students by connecting theoretical knowledge with real-world applications. The labs will facilitate multidisciplinary learning, enabling students to engage in activities that integrate subject-based knowledge. It is hoped that this initiative will foster employability and vocational readiness, preparing learners for future career opportunities.
Guidelines and Framework for Implementation
CBSE has provided detailed guidelines covering infrastructure, equipment, safety standards, and other relevant issues. The list of lab equipment mentioned is indicative, allowing each school to choose equipment based on its specific needs. School heads are urged to take appropriate steps to create and utilize these labs efficiently, ensuring they serve as effective tools for skill development.
