Ceiling Fan Collapse Injures Two Young Students at Rajasthan Government School
In a distressing incident that has highlighted infrastructure safety concerns in educational institutions, two students were injured when a ceiling fan, along with its mounting hook, fell on them during morning classes at a Government Upper Primary School in Sansiyo Ka Tala village of Barmer district, Rajasthan. The accident occurred on Monday morning, creating panic among students and staff members who were present at the school.
Immediate Response and Hospitalization
The injured children were promptly rushed to the district hospital in Barmer by school staff and local villagers, where they are currently receiving medical treatment. According to official reports, the incident happened shortly after classes had commenced following the morning prayer assembly. A ceiling fan that was in operation suddenly detached from its fixture and fell directly onto two students who were seated in their classroom.
Details of the Injured Students and Classroom Setup
The injured students have been identified as five-year-old Manish, a Class 1 student who is the son of Arjunram, and six-year-old Manish, a Class 2 student who is the son of Jabararam. Family members hurried to the hospital immediately after being notified about the accident. The classroom where the incident occurred accommodates students from both Class 1 and Class 2 together in a shared learning space.
Teacher's Account and Technical Investigation
Teacher Mukesh Aman provided crucial details about the sequence of events, explaining that the two students had entered the classroom ahead of their classmates and taken their seats when the fan hook, which was attached to an iron panel, broke unexpectedly, causing the entire fan unit to collapse onto them. Preliminary investigations indicate that two ceiling fans had been installed on an iron angle within the classroom. One of the fan hooks had become loose over time and had shifted position closer to the adjacent fan. When the two fans collided during operation, the weakened hook broke completely, leading to the fan's fall.
Official Response and Previous Safety Incidents
Tehsildar Hukmichand visited the school following the incident and announced that all electrical fittings and ceiling fans would undergo comprehensive inspection and necessary repairs to prevent similar accidents in the future. During discussions with officials, villagers also revealed that just two days prior to this incident, another child had received an electric shock at the same school. Following that earlier incident, electrical boards had been examined by a technician, though apparently without addressing the ceiling fan installations that ultimately failed.
This alarming event has raised serious questions about maintenance protocols and safety standards in government school infrastructure across the region, particularly in rural areas where resources may be limited. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of regular safety audits in educational institutions to protect young students from preventable accidents.
