Chandigarh Education Department Proposes 2026 School Holiday Calendar
The Education Department of the Union Territory of Chandigarh has put forward a detailed proposal for the holiday calendar applicable to all government, government-aided, model, and non-model schools for the academic year 2026. This initiative follows thorough deliberations by a departmental committee, aiming to standardize breaks and optimize the academic schedule across the region.
Summer Vacation Schedule and Teacher Working Days
According to the minutes from committee meetings held in January and March, the summer vacation is slated to span from May 23 to June 30, 2026, totaling 39 days. However, it is important to note that the final two days of this period, June 29 and 30, have been specifically designated as working days for teaching staff. This adjustment ensures that administrative and preparatory tasks can be completed before the new academic term begins, without extending the break for students.
Comprehensive Holiday Calendar Details
The proposed calendar encompasses several key breaks beyond the summer vacation:
- Autumn Break: A five-day recess from November 7 to November 11, 2026.
- Winter Break: A 13-day holiday from January 1 to January 13, 2027.
- Local Holidays: Two local festivals—Raksha Bandhan on August 28 and Karva Chauth on October 29—have been included.
- Additional Holiday: One discretionary holiday to be decided by the school principal, allowing flexibility based on local needs.
- Second Saturdays: These will continue to be observed as holidays in all government and aided schools, maintaining a consistent weekly break pattern.
Committee Review and Approval Process
The departmental committee conducted an extensive review before finalizing these dates. Officials examined the Chandigarh Administration's declared holiday list for 2026 and referenced the previously approved schedule from the preceding year to ensure alignment and continuity. This meticulous approach aims to balance academic requirements with cultural and seasonal considerations.
The recommendations are currently pending formal approval by the competent authority. Once sanctioned, this calendar will provide a structured framework for the 2026 academic year, facilitating planning for schools, students, and parents alike.
