CISCE Introduces Ayurveda and Yoga in ICSE Environmental Science Curriculum

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has taken a significant step by incorporating ayurveda and yoga as integral topics within the environmental science syllabus for classes IX and X. This innovative move is part of a broader initiative to make the subject more engaging and transformative for students across India.

Alignment with National Education Policy 2020

This curriculum enhancement is directly aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes the integration of Indian Knowledge Systems into modern education. These systems encompass traditional knowledge and practices developed over centuries in India, spanning philosophy, science, arts, and culture.

The newly developed resource material for ICSE environmental science at the secondary level includes comprehensive coverage of ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine utilizing herbs and natural remedies. Additionally, yoga has been incorporated as a practice promoting overall wellness, with the course material clarifying that yoga extends beyond mere flexibility or asanas to encompass a holistic lifestyle approach supported by ancient facts.

Comprehensive Curriculum Enhancements

The updated curriculum features several important additions:

  • Detailed tables listing various Indian and global medicinal plants along with their traditional uses
  • Expanded coverage of water conservation techniques and strategies
  • Enhanced sections on biodiversity preservation and ecosystem management
  • Discussion of the social and economic consequences of unsustainable development
  • Examination of the Triple Planetary Crisis (TPC) and its environmental impacts
  • Guidance on sustainable handprint actions for positive environmental change

Official Statements and Educational Vision

Chief Executive and Secretary Joseph Emmanuel emphasized the thoughtful development of this resource material, stating: "This resource material has been thoughtfully developed to support schools and teachers in delivering environmental science as an engaging and transformative learning experience. Aligned with the recommendations of the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, it integrates diverse topics and subtopics related to environmental awareness and critical thinking."

Emmanuel further explained that the curriculum provides "a comprehensive and coherent learning framework" with well-defined scope and progression across all included topics.

School Responses and Implementation

Several school principals have welcomed this curriculum development, noting that many institutions already incorporate yoga as part of physical education programs. However, they emphasize that inclusion in the formal curriculum will bring greater seriousness and depth to student learning.

Mousumi Saha, Principal of National English School, commented: "We have yoga classes for students, but when it is included in the curriculum, students will take it more seriously. Moreover, many relevant topics have been included, which I think students need to learn."

Rodney Borneo, Principal of St Augustine's Day School in Shyamnagar, described the move as welcome, noting that "students will learn many things that will lead them towards experiential learning."

Sujoy Biswas, Principal of Rammohan Mission School, observed the growing trend of reviving traditional Indian civilization elements, stating: "There is a trend of bringing back traditional Indian civilisation, which has become very popular. Ayurveda, yoga, traditional crops, and medicinal plants are all part of the rich Indian tradition, which will also be covered through this."

The integration of these traditional knowledge systems represents a significant shift in environmental science education, combining ancient wisdom with modern environmental concerns to create a more holistic and culturally relevant learning experience for Indian students.
