Maharashtra Education Department Initiates Free Psychological Assessments for SSC Students
The state education department of Maharashtra is set to launch a comprehensive free psychological assessment and counseling program for Secondary School Certificate (SSC, Standard X) students, commencing this Monday. This innovative initiative is specifically designed to assist students in making well-informed academic and career decisions following their crucial board examinations.
Addressing a Critical Need for Over 16 Lakh Students
With more than 16 lakh students appearing for the SSC examinations this year alone, education officials have identified a significant challenge: many students and their parents face considerable difficulty in choosing between traditional junior college streams and emerging skill-based education pathways. To effectively tackle this widespread issue, the department has partnered with the State Council of Education Research and Training (SCERT) to implement a structured guidance program grounded in scientific assessment methodologies.
Scientific Assessment Tools and Detailed Reporting
Dipak Mali, secretary of the state board, elaborated on the process, stating, "The program incorporates a series of specialized tests including aptitude assessments, interest inventories, adjustment analyses, and non-verbal reasoning evaluations. Based on each student's performance, percentile scores are meticulously generated and compiled into a comprehensive, detailed report. The SCERT has taken full responsibility for overseeing and managing this vital program."
Deepali Jogdande, the official in-charge at SCERT, emphasized the core objective, explaining, "The primary aim is to provide much-needed clarity during a pivotal stage in a student's academic journey. These scientific assessments are instrumental in identifying individual strengths, genuine interests, and potential career trajectories. This initiative is poised to empower students with the right direction and enhanced confidence as they transition into the next phase of their educational pursuits."
Personalized Counseling and Parental Involvement
Following the completion of the assessments, trained professional counselors will conduct personalized one-on-one sessions with both students and their parents. Utilizing the detailed assessment reports, these counselors will provide tailored recommendations regarding suitable academic streams, optimal subject combinations, and specific areas that may require additional focus or improvement.
Mahesh Lakde, a teacher from a Pune-based school who participated in capacity-building training conducted by SCERT, highlighted the inclusive approach, noting, "Parents are actively integrated into the counseling process to ensure that decisions are made with a clear and mutual understanding of the child's unique abilities and personal aspirations. This collaborative method helps prevent students from feeling undue pressure or confusion while making these critical life choices."
Identifying Multiple Academic Pathways
Education officials further clarified that the program is designed to help each student identify at least two viable academic trajectories that align with their demonstrated capabilities. Simultaneously, the assessments make students consciously aware of their limitations, fostering a realistic and balanced approach to future planning. This holistic guidance initiative represents a significant step forward in supporting the educational and career development of Maharashtra's youth at a decisive juncture in their lives.
