Gujarat Board Exams Witness Cheating Incidents as Students Tackle Manageable Papers

During the ongoing Class 10 and 12 board examinations conducted by the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) on Friday, two separate cases of malpractice were reported, casting a shadow over the otherwise smooth conduct of the tests. In Banaskantha district, authorities allegedly caught a dummy candidate attempting to appear in place of an actual student during the Class 12 general stream examination. Simultaneously, a copying case was registered against a student in Jamnagar district, highlighting ongoing challenges in maintaining exam integrity.

Examination Details and Student Feedback

The examinations held on Friday included Gujarati (second language) for Class 10 English-medium students, Geography for Class 12 general stream, and a language paper for Class 12 science students. Overall, students and teachers reported that the papers were manageable and relatively easy, contributing to a positive testing environment for most participants.

Subject expert Mitesh Pathak commented on the Class 10 Gujarati paper for English-medium students, describing it as "very simple" with a grammar section that followed expected patterns. Essay topics provided in the paper were culturally and socially relevant, including:

  • "Swachhta Tya Prabhuta" (Cleanliness is next to godliness)
  • "Books are man's true friends"

Additionally, students were tasked with writing a report on a tree plantation programme organised in their school, encouraging practical application of language skills. For Class 12, the general stream Geography paper and the language paper for the science stream were also noted to be comparatively easy, with both students and teachers expressing satisfaction with the question patterns and difficulty levels.

Legal Actions and Exam Integrity

In response to the malpractice incidents, authorities have taken swift action. A formal case was registered against the student allegedly caught copying in Jamnagar district, while a complaint was filed in the Banaskantha case involving the dummy candidate. These measures underscore the GSHSEB's commitment to upholding exam standards and deterring future violations.

The juxtaposition of these cheating cases with the generally positive feedback on paper difficulty raises concerns about exam security protocols. As the board examinations continue, officials are likely to enhance vigilance to prevent similar incidents, ensuring a fair and transparent assessment process for all students across Gujarat.
