Gujarat Launches Online Registration for RTE Act Admissions 2026-27
Ahmedabad: The online registration process for admissions under the Right to Education Act for the 2026-27 academic year in Gujarat will commence on Saturday and continue through April 17. This initiative opens Class 1 admission opportunities for children from economically weaker sections and middle-class families across the state.
Significant Reduction in Available Seats
This year, more than 84,000 seats will be available in private schools throughout Gujarat, marking a notable decrease from the approximately 94,000 seats offered during the previous academic year. Under the established RTE norms, private schools are mandated to reserve 25% of their total admissions from the preceding year for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Officials Emphasize Preparation Time for Parents
Officials from the Directorate of Primary Education have stated that parents have been provided with sufficient time to gather all necessary documents, aiming to facilitate a smoother and more efficient application process. The distribution of available seats across different mediums is as follows:
- More than 41,000 seats in Gujarati medium schools
- 40,262 seats in English medium schools
- 2,235 seats in Hindi medium schools
- 320 seats in other language mediums
New Features in the Admission Process
A major enhancement introduced this year grants parents the ability to select not only the school but also the preferred school shift—either morning or afternoon. This option represents a significant change, as it was not available in previous admission cycles.
Revised Priority Criteria for Applicants
The admission process also incorporates a revision in the priority criteria for seat allocation. Previously, children enrolled in anganwadi centres were given preference over applicants from reserved categories. However, for the 2026-27 admissions, priority will now be accorded to children belonging to reserved categories, altering the selection hierarchy.
This comprehensive admission drive under the Right to Education Act continues to be a crucial mechanism for promoting educational equity and access for underprivileged students in Gujarat's private schooling system.
