Gujarat RTE Admissions 2026: Online Portal Opens for Over 84,000 Private School Seats

The online application process for admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act in Gujarat officially commenced on April 4, 2026, marking the beginning of the enrollment period for Class 1 seats in private schools across the state. This initiative is specifically designed to provide educational access to children from economically weaker and middle-income families, ensuring equitable opportunities in quality education.

Application Timeline and Seat Availability

The application window will remain open until April 17, 2026, with submissions accepted until midnight on the final day. In the current academic year, the total number of available seats in private schools stands at over 84,000, which represents a decrease from the previous year's allocation of 94,000 seats. As mandated by the RTE Act, 25% of these seats are reserved for students from weaker sections of society, with the reservation based on admissions conducted in the preceding year.

Medium-Wise Distribution of Seats

The seat distribution across different mediums of instruction is as follows:

  • Gujarati Medium: Over 41,000 seats
  • English Medium: 40,262 seats
  • Hindi Medium: 2,235 seats
  • Other Mediums: 320 seats

Officials from the Directorate of Primary Education have emphasized that sufficient time has been allocated for parents to gather all necessary documents to facilitate a smooth admission process.

New Features in the 2026 Admission Process

This year introduces several significant enhancements to the admission procedure. For the first time, parents have the option to select both the school and the preferred timing for their children, choosing between morning or afternoon shifts. This flexibility was not available in previous admission cycles.

Additionally, the revised priority list has been incorporated into this year's process. While earlier procedures gave preference to children admitted from anganwadi centres over reserved category candidates, the current year will prioritize children belonging to reserved categories.

Application Procedure and Required Documentation

All applications must be submitted exclusively through the official online portal. Parents are required to upload supporting documents during the online form submission. The essential documents include:

  1. Proof of date of birth (birth certificate issued by authorized agencies)
  2. Proof of residence (Aadhaar card, passport, electricity bills, water bills, or voter ID card)
  3. Caste or category certificate issued by competent authorities
  4. Income certificate valid as of April 1, 2023

For income verification, Income Tax return documents should be included where applicable. In cases where no Income Tax returns are filed, a self-declaration form must be signed, declaring the income as non-taxable.

Important Guidelines for Document Submission

Parents are strongly advised to meticulously verify all documents before submission to prevent application rejection. Regarding proof of residence, a registered rent agreement will only be considered valid when none of the previously mentioned documents are available. Notably, notarized rent agreements are not acceptable under any circumstances.

Additional important documents may include certificates for disabled children, orphaned children, and children of migrant workers. Applicants are recommended to maintain one printed copy of the completed online application for their records.

The Directorate of Primary Education has implemented these measures to streamline the admission process and ensure transparency and accessibility for all eligible families across Gujarat.
