Gujarat University Recruitment Exams Proceed Amidst Growing Controversy

In Ahmedabad, Gujarat University (GU) has initiated recruitment examinations for 130 administrative positions, including senior and junior clerks, starting this Saturday. The process is expected to see participation from over 8,000 candidates, but it has been marred by significant protests and allegations from student groups, particularly concerning recruitment norms and procedural issues.

Protests Erupt Over Age Relaxation Dispute

On Friday, members of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) staged a demonstration outside the university campus. The protest centered on the administration's decision not to grant age relaxation to women candidates from reserved categories, a move that has sparked outrage among student activists. Protesters attempted to submit a representation to university authorities but were reportedly prevented from entering the campus.

According to NSUI members, university officials closed the campus gates, citing preparations for the upcoming examinations and declaring a holiday to avoid further demonstrations. They alleged that despite the vice-chancellor being present in the office, protestors were not allowed to meet with officials or present their concerns, raising questions about transparency and accessibility.

Allegations of Outsourcing and Pending Approvals

The student organisation has also raised serious questions about the recruitment process itself. NSUI members claim that approval from the state government for the recruitment is still pending, casting doubt on the legitimacy of the examinations. Furthermore, they allege that the examination process has been quietly outsourced to an external agency, a move they suspect is designed to favour certain candidates.

In response to these allegations, NSUI has warned of intensified protests if the issues remain unresolved, highlighting the potential for ongoing disruption and public scrutiny.

Examination Schedule and Logistics

The recruitment examinations are scheduled to be held over two days. On Saturday, tests for posts with fewer applicants will be conducted, while examinations for senior and junior clerk positions will take place on Sunday. Notably, these exams will be held at several affiliated colleges instead of the main university campus, a logistical change that has added to the controversy.

This decision to relocate the exams has been viewed by some as an attempt to manage the protest situation, but it has also raised concerns about fairness and coordination in the recruitment process.

As the exams proceed, the situation remains tense, with student groups vowing to continue their opposition until their demands are addressed. The outcome of this recruitment drive could have significant implications for future administrative hires at Gujarat University and set a precedent for how such processes are handled in educational institutions across the region.
