Gurgaon School Principal Arrested for Alleged CBSE Affiliation Fraud
In a significant development in Gurgaon, the principal of a private school has been apprehended by authorities for her alleged involvement in a deceptive scheme that cheated students by falsely claiming Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) affiliation. Details of the Arrest and Charges
Riddhima Kataria, the principal of Educrest International School located in Sector 9B, was taken into custody by the crime branch from Ahmedabad on April 18. This action follows the earlier arrest of the school's chairman, Vinay Kataria, in connection with the same case. An FIR was officially registered at the Sector 9A police station under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 318(4) for cheating, Section 316(2) for criminal breach of trust, and Section 3(5) for common intention. The charges have been levied against the entire management and staff of the institution, highlighting the systemic nature of the alleged fraud.
Origin of the Complaint and Investigation
The matter came to light after a concerned parent filed a formal complaint on February 18. The complainant alleged that her daughter, a Class 10 student, was induced to enroll at Educrest International School based on misleading assurances that the institution held valid CBSE affiliation. During the admission process, the school reportedly presented a recognition certificate and an affiliation number to substantiate its claims, thereby collecting substantial fees under various categories such as tuition, building fund, examination, and computer charges.
However, as the board examinations approached, the student failed to receive an admit card, prompting further scrutiny. Subsequent verification by authorities revealed a troubling truth: the school did not possess CBSE affiliation for Class 10, and the registration number provided was entirely invalid. This revelation has resulted in the student losing an entire academic year, underscoring the severe consequences of the alleged deceit.
Scope of the Fraud and Additional Accused
During police interrogation, Vinay Kataria confessed that Educrest International School had legitimate CBSE recognition only up to Class 8. Despite this limitation, the institution admitted students to Classes 9 and 10 using fabricated affiliation documents. Investigators estimate that approximately 25 students were enrolled in these higher classes, placing their academic futures at significant risk due to the fraudulent practices.
In addition to the chairman and principal, other key figures named in the FIR include vice-principal Simar Batra, coordinator Sonia, and several other staff members.
