Gurgaon: The assessment system in primary schools across the district is set for a major transformation from the academic session 2025-26, with the introduction of a holistic progress card for students from Classes I to V. This new approach moves beyond traditional marks-based evaluation to a more comprehensive review of a child's overall development.
New Assessment Framework Under NEP 2020
Under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework, the new system will evaluate students not only on academic performance but also on health, behaviour, mental growth, and life skills. Approximately 350 students in primary schools are expected to receive their report cards in this revised format this year.
District nodal officer Manoj Lakra explained that the system is designed to bring out the complete development of students. "This will help us identify each student's true potential and guide them in the right direction," he said. Officials believe the system will make education more practical, skill-based, and student-centric.
Components of the Holistic Progress Card
The holistic progress card evaluates cognitive abilities, emotional balance, social behaviour, and participation in creative activities. It will also record key health indicators such as height, weight, and fitness levels, ensuring regular monitoring of students' physical development. The system incorporates self-assessment by students and feedback from parents, making the evaluation process more inclusive and reflective.
Teachers will assess students throughout the academic session by observing their classroom participation, activities, and behaviour, rather than relying solely on periodic examinations. "Continuous assessments will allow teachers to comprehend each child's learning curve in a better way," an official said.
Benefits of the New System
The new system is expected to reduce the pressure of scoring high marks while helping teachers identify individual strengths and weaknesses more effectively. Officials stated that the initiative could bring several benefits, including personalised attention for students and clearer communication with parents about a child's progress.
This shift aligns with NEP 2020's emphasis on holistic education and aims to foster a more supportive learning environment. By focusing on overall development, the holistic progress card seeks to nurture well-rounded individuals prepared for future challenges.
