Tragic Death of IIT Graduate Civil Services Aspirant in Shahjahanpur
A 25-year-old civil services aspirant and IIT Mumbai graduate was found dead near a riverbank in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, in a case that has highlighted the severe pressures faced by students in competitive examinations. The young man, identified as Abhinav Verma, left behind a poignant suicide note detailing his struggle with academic burdens and societal expectations.
Details of the Incident and Recovery of Suicide Note
Abhinav Verma, a resident of Saiyyad Bara locality in Tilhar, had completed his engineering degree from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Mumbai approximately two years ago. Despite having lucrative corporate job opportunities available to him, he chose to pursue civil services preparation, viewing it as a higher calling. According to Bareilly DIG Ajay Kumar Sahani, a two-page suicide note was recovered from his room, providing insight into his mental state.
The suicide note contained heartfelt advice and reflections on academic pressure. Abhinav wrote that he could no longer bear the burden of studies and urged others to consider alternative paths like farming or gardening rather than taking on unnecessary academic stress. He specifically advised his younger brother to work hard without succumbing to show-off tendencies or excessive pressure, emphasizing the importance of defining success on one's own terms rather than chasing societal benchmarks.
Final Hours and Discovery of the Body
On the morning of the incident, Abhinav spoke with his younger brother Ayushman, a NEET aspirant studying in Kota, around 9:30 AM. During the call, he advised Ayushman to focus on studies but cautioned him to avoid unnecessary pressure and societal expectations. Approximately ten minutes after the call, Abhinav left his home without informing anyone.
When his parents returned home, they found his phone and wallet inside, initially assuming he had stepped out briefly. His father, Rakesh Verma, works as a gram vikas adhikari, while his mother, Meenakshi, is a government school teacher. As evening approached and Abhinav did not return, the family began searching for him and later lodged a missing person complaint with local authorities.
His body was subsequently discovered near a bridge over the Garra River. Police officials confirmed the location and circumstances of the discovery. DIG Ajay Kumar Sahani stated that a postmortem examination was conducted, and the cause of death was determined to be drowning. The family has not alleged any foul play in the incident, according to police reports.
Background and Preparation for Civil Services
For the past two years, Abhinav had been diligently preparing for the civil services examination through online coaching platforms. He was expected to appear for the examination next year, dedicating significant time and effort to his studies. His choice to pursue civil services over corporate opportunities reflects a growing trend among young graduates seeking meaningful public service careers, albeit under immense pressure.
This tragic incident underscores the critical need for mental health support and pressure management among students preparing for highly competitive examinations. The suicide note's message about avoiding societal benchmarks and defining personal success resonates as a cautionary tale for educational systems and families alike.
