Karnataka School Education Department Reinstates Mandatory E-Attendance Order
The Department of School Education and Literacy in Karnataka has officially re-issued a directive mandating electronic attendance for students across government and aided primary schools, high schools, and pre-university colleges. This significant policy shift is scheduled to take effect from the academic year 2026–27, marking a pivotal step towards digital integration in the state's educational framework.
Implementation of AI-Based Facial Recognition System
In a previous budget announcement, the Karnataka government introduced the 'Niranthara' programme, which aims to record student attendance through advanced facial recognition technology. A substantial allocation of Rs 5 crore was designated for the procurement and installation of artificial intelligence-based mobile devices and other necessary equipment to support this initiative.
However, the implementation faced delays and was not rolled out during the 2025–26 academic year. Consequently, the initial order was withdrawn to allow for further planning and refinement. The department has now clarified that the programme will be executed through the e-governance centre of the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, with a revised estimated cost of Rs 2.2 crore.
Mandatory Mobile App Attendance for Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff
In a parallel development, the department has issued an additional order requiring all teaching and non-teaching staff in government schools and colleges to confirm their attendance using the 'KAMS' (Karnataka Attendance Management System) mobile application. This move is designed to streamline administrative processes and enhance accountability within educational institutions.
The key components of this comprehensive e-attendance mandate include:
- Mandatory e-attendance for students in government and aided primary schools, high schools, and pre-university colleges starting from 2026–27.
- Utilization of AI-driven facial recognition technology under the 'Niranthara' programme to ensure accurate and efficient tracking.
- A revised budget allocation of Rs 2.2 crore for implementation through the e-governance centre.
- Compulsory use of the KAMS mobile application by all teaching and non-teaching staff for attendance confirmation.
This initiative underscores Karnataka's commitment to leveraging technology for improved governance and operational efficiency in the education sector. By integrating digital tools, the state aims to foster a more transparent and accountable educational environment, ultimately benefiting students, educators, and administrative personnel alike.
