Tragic School Bus Accident Claims Student's Life in Coastal Karnataka
A educational excursion turned into tragedy on Sunday evening when a school bus carrying 44 Class 10 students from Mysuru overturned in Honnavar taluk, claiming the life of a young student and leaving five others seriously injured.
The fatal accident occurred around 5 pm on Sunday near Gerusoppa Sule Moorki Cross in Uttara Kannada district. The private chartered bus was transporting students from Taralabalu Educational Institution in TK Layout, Mysuru during their return from visiting Jog Falls.
Casualties and Immediate Aftermath
Pavan, a Class 10 student, lost his life instantly at the accident site. The injured included four of his classmates and a woman teacher who suffered a hand fracture among other injuries.
All five injured were promptly rushed to a nearby hospital where medical authorities confirmed their condition had stabilized and was out of danger. Additionally, six other individuals received outpatient treatment for minor injuries.
The school trip had commenced around 10 pm on Saturday from Mysuru with plans to return on Tuesday. The group included four teachers, one attendant, the bus driver, and a cleaner accompanying the 44 students.
Investigation Reveals Safety Violations
According to Mysuru DDPI D Uday Kumar, preliminary investigations uncovered serious procedural lapses. The school authorities had not obtained necessary permission from the Department of Public Instruction before organizing the trip.
Furthermore, the institution had hired a private bus for the excursion, deviating from the standard practice of using KSRTC buses which are generally considered safer for school transportation.
Police reports indicate the accident occurred when the driver lost control while navigating a curve, causing the vehicle to flip three times before coming to rest. The dramatic overturning multiplied the impact and resulting injuries.

Local residents expressed anger and frustration over what they described as repeated accidents in the area. Community members squarely blamed the transport department for failing to implement essential safety measures that could prevent such tragedies.
