Karnataka SSLC Exams Kick Off Amid Major Attendance Hurdle
The Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations in Karnataka began on Wednesday with the first language paper, but the event was overshadowed by a significant attendance crisis. According to the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB), around 35,000 students were unable to appear for the exam due to insufficient attendance, failing to meet the mandatory 75% attendance requirement.
Government Intervention and Past Precedents
An official from KSEAB highlighted the severity of the situation, stating, "We will bring this to the notice of the government. Last year, the government allowed these students to take the SSLC exam. It can provide the same facility this year." This statement underscores ongoing discussions about potential leniency for affected students, mirroring last year's approach where exemptions were granted.
Discrepancies in Student Counts Raise Concerns
The issue is further complicated by discrepancies in the reported number of students taking the exam. A week prior to the Pre-University (PU) exams, Minister for School Education and Literacy Madhu Bangarappa held a press conference, announcing that 9,02,889 students were registered, including 8,12,855 freshers, 62,845 repeaters, and 27,189 private candidates.
However, by Tuesday, the minister revised this figure in the legislature, stating that only 8,65,988 students would appear. This reduction of approximately 36,901 students has sparked debate. KSEAB officials suggested that initial counts might have included students without sufficient attendance, while other stakeholders pointed to possible overcounting.
Breakdown of Exam Participation
According to the latest data, the student distribution across school types is as follows:
- 3.6 lakh students from government schools
- 2.1 lakh students from aided schools
- 2.9 lakh students from unaided schools
KSEAB officials have refrained from commenting on the discrepancies, leaving the matter unresolved as exams proceed.
First SSLC Paper: Attendance Highlights
The inaugural SSLC paper saw robust participation, with key statistics emerging:
- Number of students appeared: 8.2 lakh
- Overall attendance registered: 98.5%
- Highest attendance: 99.6% in Udupi district
- Lowest attendance: 96.4% in Bidar district
These figures, rounded off for clarity, indicate a high turnout among eligible students, contrasting sharply with the thousands barred due to attendance issues.
Implications and Ongoing Scrutiny
The attendance crisis highlights systemic challenges in Karnataka's education system, including enforcement of rules and accurate student tracking. As exams continue, stakeholders are closely monitoring government responses and potential policy adjustments to address the exclusion of 35,000 students. The situation underscores the need for consistent data management and flexible solutions to support student academic progression.
