Karur Teacher Suspended Over Sexual Harassment Allegations Involving Students
A government middle school teacher in Kadavur, located near Karur, has been suspended following grave allegations of sexual harassment involving students. The incident has sparked significant community outrage and led to immediate administrative action.
Protest by Parents and Students Demands Justice
Complaints against the teacher, identified as Murugan, aged 53, surfaced after students and their parents organized a sit-in protest on the Karur–Manapparai road this Tuesday. The protesters leveled serious accusations, alleging that the teacher frequently attended school while under the influence of alcohol, verbally abused children, and engaged in inappropriate behavior that amounted to sexual harassment.
The agitation caused considerable disruption to traffic for a period, with parents vociferously demanding the immediate arrest of the teacher and the transfer of the school's headmaster. Police and education officials swiftly arrived at the scene to engage in talks with the demonstrators, assuring them that strict action would be taken based on a thorough inquiry. Following these assurances, the protesters dispersed, allowing normalcy to return to the area.
Immediate Suspension and Official Complaint Filed
Hours after the protest concluded, the district education department took decisive action by placing the teacher under suspension pending further investigation. Officials from the school education department confirmed that a formal complaint has also been lodged with the police. This complaint was filed by the district child protection officer after conducting a preliminary inquiry into the allegations, underscoring the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the matter.
Murugan, who taught at the Varavanai union government middle school and handled classes I to III, is now at the center of a police investigation. Authorities have stated that further investigation is currently underway to ascertain the full extent of the allegations and ensure appropriate legal measures are implemented.
