Karnataka Examinations Authority Clarifies CET Ranking Policy for PU Science Students
In an important announcement, the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) has provided crucial clarification regarding the calculation of marks for the Common Entrance Test (CET) ranking. The authority confirmed on Monday that for students of the II Pre-University (PU) science stream, the highest marks obtained across either Exam-1 or Exam-2 will be considered for determining their CET ranking.
Continuation of Previous Year's Policy
KEA executive director H Prasanna emphasized that this policy represents a continuation of the approach followed in the previous academic year. Students who choose to appear for the second examination with the intention of improving their scores can do so without anxiety, as their best performance in either attempt will be taken into account for ranking purposes.
The clarification from the examination authority came in response to circulating rumors and concerns among students and educational stakeholders. There had been speculation that marks from the second examination might not be considered for CET ranking calculations, creating uncertainty among those planning to take Exam-2 to enhance their scores.
Timeline for Result Declarations
Prasanna further clarified the procedural timeline, noting that CET results will only be declared after both Exam-1 and Exam-2 PU results have been officially announced. This sequential approach ensures that all relevant examination data is available before final CET rankings are computed and published.
Important Limitations to the Policy
While this provision offers significant relief to many students, it comes with specific limitations that candidates must understand:
- The policy applies exclusively to students following the Karnataka state Pre-University College (PUC) syllabus
- Candidates from Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) backgrounds are not covered under this rule
- Students from Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) boards are excluded from this provision
- Candidates from other state or central educational boards will not benefit from this policy
This clarification provides much-needed certainty for thousands of science stream students across Karnataka who are preparing for their crucial entrance examinations. The assurance that their best performance will be recognized regardless of which examination attempt yields higher marks allows students to focus on their preparation without unnecessary stress about strategic examination attempts.
