Kerala Minister V Sivankutty Addresses Malappuram School Tragedy
General Education Minister V Sivankutty has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of nine individuals, including teachers from the GLP School at Pang Palliparambu in Malappuram, an event that has sent shockwaves throughout Kerala. The victims, who played a pivotal role in transforming the school from one lagging in academic performance and student strength into a well-regarded institution, are being mourned by the community.
Victims and Immediate Response
Those who lost their lives in this heartbreaking incident include school headmistress Ajitha, teachers Majeed, Asha, and Ramla Suhra, and cook Sajitha. Additionally, the deceased are Shakeela, a teacher at the GUP School in Pang, Rukhiya Suhra (wife of Majeed), and her son Hisham. In response, Minister Sivankutty assured that the government will provide all eligible assistance to the families of the victims as per existing norms, emphasizing support during this difficult time.
Measures to Ensure School Continuity
Despite the tragedy occurring during the summer vacation, steps are being taken to ensure the school's functioning continues without disruption. Temporary teachers will be appointed on a war footing to overcome the crisis, with the headmaster of GUP School, Ahmed Kutty, being given additional temporary charge of GLP School. The responsibility for these arrangements lies with the Malappuram district education officer, who is currently holding additional charge as deputy director, with oversight provided by an additional director from the directorate of general education.
Psychological Support for Students
In view of the emotional impact on students, arrangements are being made to provide psychological counselling. The general education department is coordinating closely with the health department to implement this initiative. The district officer of the women and child welfare department will oversee the counselling arrangements, which are set to begin a week prior to the reopening of the school, as stated by Minister Sivankutty.
Broader Implications and Community Impact
This tragedy highlights the critical role educators play in community development and the need for robust support systems in times of crisis. The government's swift action in appointing temporary staff and providing counselling underscores a commitment to maintaining educational stability and emotional well-being. The community's resilience is being tested, but with coordinated efforts, the school aims to recover and honor the legacy of those lost.
