The absence of security guards in primary government schools across Ludhiana district has ignited significant safety concerns among parents and students. Recent observations reveal a troubling scenario where young children, often unsupervised, are seen crossing busy roads on their own after school hours due to the lack of personnel at school gates.
Parents and Officials Voice Growing Worries
When questioned, school officials acknowledged the safety issue but explained they are unable to hire security guards because no such official posts exist for these institutions. In primary government schools, which cater to students from nursery to Class V, there is typically no designated school official or non-teaching staff member responsible for overseeing children once classes conclude and students exit the building.
This gap in supervision has led to heightened anxiety among parents, who are increasingly questioning how student safety can be assured not only during school hours but also in the critical moments after dismissal and in surrounding areas. Teachers, head teachers, and parents alike have emphasized that proactive initiatives from the education department and government authorities are essential to address this vulnerability.
Systemic Gaps in School Security Infrastructure
Education department officials confirmed that Ludhiana district has a total of 996 primary government schools, none of which have allocated positions for security guards or campus managers. In contrast, government high schools and senior secondary schools with enrollments exceeding 500 students are equipped with security personnel.
A primary government school teacher highlighted the practical challenges, noting, "Teachers are often occupied with academic responsibilities and school schedules. When school ends, children rush to leave, and without proper supervision, their safety is compromised. Authorities must consider creating posts for security guards or campus managers in primary schools to protect our children."
Official Response and Future Prospects
Manoj Kumar, Deputy District Education Officer (Primary) in Ludhiana, addressed the issue by stating, "The state government and education department are committed to providing the best facilities for students in Punjab's government schools. However, currently, there are no designated positions for security guards or campus managers in primary schools. We hope that the government and higher authorities will make an informed decision based on the prevailing situation."
