In a significant move to honour Rajput valor, the Rajasthan government has decided to commemorate Maharana Pratap's coronation day annually in all state-run schools. The announcement was made by the state's Education Minister, Madan Dilawar, during a public event in Chittorgarh.
Official Announcement at Rashtriya Swadeshi Mahotsav
Education Minister Madan Dilawar revealed the new initiative on Sunday. He was addressing the gathering at the closing ceremony of the Rashtriya Swadeshi Mahotsav held in Chittorgarh. The minister stated that February 28, the date Maharana Pratap was crowned, will now be a fixed event in the academic calendar of Rajasthan's schools.
The primary objective, as outlined by Dilawar, is to ensure that students draw inspiration from the glorious saga and bravery of Maharana Pratap. The celebrations will involve various activities in schools to educate the younger generation about his life and struggles.
Correcting Historical Narratives
Minister Dilawar did not mince words when discussing the historical portrayal of the 16th-century Rajput king. He accused certain historians of having greatly insulted Maharana Pratap by depicting him as inferior to the Mughal Emperor Akbar.
"Akbar was an invader, and Maharana Pratap was a brave warrior who gave the Mughals a tough time," asserted Dilawar. He emphatically declared that Maharana Pratap is not only the pride and glory of Rajasthan but of the whole of India and will forever remain a revered figure.
Response to Public Demand
This policy decision was not made in isolation. The minister clarified that the announcement was made in response to a specific demand. Member of Parliament from Chittorgarh, CP Joshi, had advocated for the formal recognition and celebration of this day within the state's educational institutions.
The integration of this day into the school calendar signifies a conscious effort by the state government to promote indigenous historical narratives and national heroes. It is expected to foster a sense of pride and identity among students while sparking discussions on India's rich and complex history.
