A prominent forum of educationists in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district has passed a significant resolution. They are urging the state government to officially recognize the birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule as Teachers' Day in Karnataka.
Resolution at Padi Organisation Event
The demand was formally put forward during a ceremony held on Saturday. The event, which celebrated Phule's birth anniversary, took place at the office of the Padi organisation in Mangaluru city. The gathering paid rich tributes to Phule, commemorating her with immense respect and pride for her groundbreaking role in Indian society.
Leading the call was Renni D'Souza, the former chairperson of the Dakshina Kannada Child Welfare Committee. D'Souza presented a concrete proposal to institutionalize the remembrance of the social reformer within the state's education system.
Concrete Proposals to Honor a Legacy
D'Souza articulated that the Education Department should issue an official circular. This directive would instruct all schools to commemorate Savitribai Phule during their morning assemblies on both her birth and death anniversaries. This move aims to ensure every student learns about her contributions from a young age.
In his address, D'Souza elaborated on Phule's monumental struggles and achievements in the 19th century. He highlighted her identity as India's first female teacher, a fearless social reformer, and a pioneering force in women's education. Her life's work was a relentless battle for the education of women and the rights of Dalits and other oppressed communities.
An Inspiration Against All Odds
Despite facing severe opposition, social ostracization, and insults, Savitribai Phule never retreated from her mission. She stood courageously against deep-rooted social inequality, regressive superstitions, and blatant gender discrimination. Her core belief was that education is the fundamental power for societal transformation.
"Phule's life and work continue to inspire teachers today," D'Souza said. "They remind us of the enduring importance of equality, justice, and education for all. It is imperative that we all adopt Savitribai Phule's ideals and commit to building a truly equal and progressive society through the tool of education."
The resolution from the Mangaluru forum now places a formal request before the Karnataka government. It seeks to replace or supplement existing celebrations with a day dedicated to a figure who embodies the transformative power of teaching, especially for the marginalized.
