Mother Claims Ragging and Harassment Led to Medical Student's Death at Osmania College
Hyderabad: The mother of a first-year postgraduate medical student has made serious allegations that sustained harassment and ragging by senior students may have directly contributed to her son's death at Osmania Medical College. Nagamani, mother of 26-year-old K Suresh, stated that her son had recently complained about being ragged but feared reporting the incidents, believing it would only escalate the harassment.
Student's Fear of Reporting Ragging
"My son was not someone who would die by suicide out of fear," Nagamani asserted. "He recently told us over the phone that some seniors were ragging him. When we said we would come there and speak to authorities, he specifically asked us not to intervene. He was convinced that the harassment would only increase if a formal complaint was made." The grieving mother has demanded a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her son's death.
Suspicious Death Sparks Protests
The allegations emerged just one day after Suresh, a postgraduate student in MS General Surgery, was found dead in his hostel room under suspicious circumstances on Thursday. The discovery triggered immediate protests by family members and tribal organizations at Osmania General Hospital. Family members and tribal community leaders gathered near the mortuary and temporarily prevented officials from moving the body for postmortem examination, insisting that action must be taken against those responsible before any procedures could continue.
Police intervention eventually pacified the protesters, and authorities conducted the autopsy under tight security measures. The incident has raised significant concerns about student welfare and institutional accountability within medical education facilities.
Conflicting Accounts of Working Conditions
Nagamani further alleged that her son had been subjected to excessive work demands, including back-to-back shifts and frequent night duties. However, Osmania Medical College principal M Raja Rao presented a contradictory account to media outlets. According to Rao, Suresh had worked only three night duties in the three months since joining the postgraduate program, with the remainder being regular day shifts.
"There is no such thing as ragging in our college, and that too in postgraduate studies—there is absolutely no chance of such occurrences," the principal stated firmly. He emphasized that the institution maintains strict anti-ragging policies and protocols.
Official Investigation Underway
Principal Rao confirmed that an inquiry committee has been constituted to investigate the incident, headed by Dr. K Indira, principal of Gandhi Medical College. Meanwhile, Afzalgunj police have registered a case of suspicious death based on the complaint filed by Nagamani. Investigators have indicated that all possible angles are being examined, including allegations of ragging, academic stress, mental health concerns, and other contributing factors.
Student's Background and Personal Struggles
Suresh hailed from Bheemlagani Thanda in Kurvapally panchayat of Jadcherla mandal in Mahabubnagar district. He was the elder son of Ramchander and Nagamani and had completed his MBBS from a private medical college in Mahabubnagar before joining the postgraduate program at Osmania Medical College approximately three months ago.
Investigating officer SI M Subhash revealed additional context about the student's personal circumstances. Suresh had originally wanted to pursue postgraduate studies in General Medicine but joined General Surgery after securing a lower rank in the admission process. He was reportedly unhappy with this course allotment and had been experiencing significant emotional stress in recent weeks.
The officer further disclosed that Suresh had been consulting a psychiatrist in Banjara Hills and was on prescribed medication, indicating pre-existing mental health concerns that investigators are considering alongside the ragging allegations.
