MPSC Revamps Answer Sheets: New 5-Option MCQs & Carbonless System from 2026
MPSC changes answer sheets, adds 5th MCQ option from 2026

The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) has unveiled a significant overhaul of its examination answer sheet system. Aimed at enhancing accuracy and transparency, the new policy introduces a carbonless answer sheet format and a revised structure for objective-type Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) papers.

Key Changes in Answer Sheet Format and Procedure

The most notable change is the introduction of a two-part, carbonless answer sheet. Candidates will now receive a duplicate copy that they can retain after the exam. The original sheet is divided into two distinct sections. Part one is dedicated solely for marking answers, while part two is reserved for recording personal details like the examination name, subject code, question paper number, and signatures of both the candidate and the invigilator.

As per the new nationwide protocol, invigilators are mandated to separate part two from part one immediately after the answer sheets are collected. Furthermore, the candidate meeting number has been simplified to a seven-digit numeric format from the earlier eight-character alphanumeric code. This number will remain constant for a candidate throughout the entire selection process for a specific recruitment advertisement.

Introduction of Fifth Option and Stricter Marking Rules

In a major shift, every MCQ will now have five options instead of four. The fifth option is specifically for questions that a candidate does not attempt. It is compulsory for candidates to shade one of the five circles for each question. Failure to shade any option, or shading multiple options, will lead to a penalty.

The commission has standardized the negative marking scheme. An incorrect answer, an amended response, or an unanswered question will all attract the same deduction of 25 percent of the marks assigned to that question. Fractional scores obtained during evaluation will not be rounded off.

Conditions for Invalid Answer Sheets

The MPSC has issued a clear list of conditions that will render an answer sheet invalid. Candidates must strictly adhere to these to avoid disqualification:

  • Use of any pen other than a black ink ballpoint pen.
  • Missing signatures of the candidate or the invigilator.
  • Any writing, marks, or symbols on part one of the sheet, apart from the shaded answer circles.
  • Damage to the printed QR codes or timing tracks on the sheet.
  • Writing irrelevant remarks anywhere on the answer sheet.
  • Failure to clearly mention the question book number as required.
  • Not following any other updated instructions issued by the Commission.

Detailed instructions for using the new carbonless answer sheet will be printed on the back page of the duplicate copy provided to candidates.

Implementation Timeline and Objective

The revised examination procedure will be implemented for all MPSC exams conducted on or after March 1, 2026. This gives aspirants and training institutes ample time to familiarize themselves with the new system. The overarching goal of these changes is to streamline the evaluation process, minimize errors, and ensure a fair and transparent assessment for all candidates appearing for Maharashtra state government services.
