NIOS Senior Secondary Exam Papers Marred by Multiple Errors, Parents Demand Action
Parents of students who appeared for their senior secondary school examinations under the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) have raised serious concerns regarding numerous discrepancies in the question papers, creating widespread confusion and anxiety among examinees. The issues, which span multiple subjects and examination centers, have prompted calls for immediate rectification and transparency from the educational body.
Breach of Protocol and Formatting Confusion
According to parents who spoke to TOI, a fundamental breach of examination protocol occurred when question papers were printed locally at the centers instead of being delivered in securely sealed packets as per standard procedure. This deviation has raised significant questions about the confidentiality and integrity of the examination process.
The accountancy question paper examined by parents revealed particularly troubling inconsistencies. While the paper mentioned Sections A and B, there was no clear demarcation between these sections, leaving students uncertain about the paper's structure. Furthermore, the total number of questions listed as 55 contradicted the initial instructions that stated 47 questions, adding to the confusion.
Regional Concerns and Student Impact
Sandhya Viswan, a homeschooling parent who administers the Bangalore Schools group, emphasized the disproportionate impact on vulnerable students. "NIOS primarily serves children with learning difficulties," she noted. "Many students were completely overwhelmed by these administrative errors, which created unnecessary stress during an already challenging examination period."
The concerns extend beyond Bengaluru, with parents from Coimbatore, Chennai, and Kochi reporting similar issues, suggesting a potential region-wide problem. Comparative analysis of papers revealed significant variations between the biology paper from Pune, the accountancy paper from Uttarakhand, and those distributed in Bengaluru, raising questions about standardization.
Multiple Subject Issues and Parental Frustration
Parents identified additional problems with the biology examination paper, including repeated questions, unclear diagrams, and errors in multiple-choice questions. One parent, whose son participates in prestigious international programs like the Johns Hopkins Centre for Talented Youth, expressed disappointment: "We chose NIOS homeschooling specifically for its flexibility, but these procedural failures undermine the system's credibility. We would appreciate seeing substantial improvements in their examination processes."
Despite repeated attempts to contact NIOS officials via email, parents report receiving no prompt response regarding corrective measures or future protocols, exacerbating their frustration.
Official Response and Accountability Questions
When approached for comment, NIOS Regional Director V Swaminathan stated he had not personally reviewed the questioned papers and redirected responsibility to the headquarters. "All examination papers are prepared and formatted by the central office before being dispatched to regional centers," he explained. "We have no involvement in local paper formatting. To date, we have received complaints from only two or three parents."
Swaminathan further clarified his administrative role, stating, "I must emphasize that I am not an academician but an administrator," a distinction that has left parents questioning the chain of accountability for academic quality control within the NIOS system.
The situation highlights growing concerns about examination integrity and administrative responsiveness within alternative education systems, particularly as more families opt for flexible learning pathways like homeschooling through NIOS.
