NSUI Escalates Concerns Over Ranchi University's Academic Woes to Governor
The state unit of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) took decisive action on Wednesday by submitting a formal memorandum to Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar. The delegation, led by NSUI state president Vinay Oraon, highlighted a series of critical issues plaguing Ranchi University (RU), demanding immediate intervention to resolve the academic impediments faced by students.
Key Demands Outlined in the Memorandum
In their submission, the NSUI outlined several pressing demands aimed at restoring normalcy to the university's operations. These include:
- Appointment of a Regular Vice Chancellor: The absence of a permanent VC has been cited as a major factor contributing to administrative delays.
- Regularisation of Academic Sessions: Students are experiencing significant disruptions in their coursework and schedules.
- Correction of Degree Certificate Errors: Mistakes in official documents are affecting students' academic and professional prospects.
- Inquiry into Missing Answer Sheets: Allegations of lost examination materials have raised concerns about academic integrity.
- Conduct of Student Body Elections: Elections have not been held since 2019, depriving students of democratic representation.
Academic Delays and Examination Backlogs
NSUI officials provided detailed insights into the extent of the academic crisis. For the 2022-26 batch, examinations for two semesters remain pending, causing uncertainty and stress among students. Meanwhile, the 2024-28 batch has only completed one semester's exams, and the 2025-29 session has yet to see any examinations conducted. Additionally, the university has failed to hold entrance tests for the PhD 2024 batch, despite collecting examination fees, further exacerbating the delays.
Governor's Response and Future Actions
Following the meeting, Vinay Oraon reported that Governor Gangwar assured the delegation of swift action. The governor committed to appointing a regular vice chancellor in the coming days and implementing measures to prevent future session delays. However, the NSUI has also submitted a similar memorandum to the RU VC office to ensure their demands are formally recorded at the university level.
Threat of Widespread Protests
Expressing frustration over the prolonged inaction, Oraon announced that the NSUI plans to launch a 'Mahadharna' (mass sit-in protest) starting April 13 if their demands are not addressed within four days. During this protest, students from across Jharkhand are expected to gherao (surround) Ranchi University until they receive concrete assurances from the state government regarding the resolution of these issues.
Oraon emphasized that the postponement of student body elections since 2019 is a significant infringement on democratic rights, leaving students without a voice in university affairs. The NSUI's actions underscore growing discontent among the student community, calling for urgent reforms to safeguard academic progress and institutional accountability at Ranchi University.
