NSUI Protest at Rajasthan University Over RSS-Linked Women's Event Turns Violent
In a significant development at Rajasthan University in Jaipur, functionaries of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) engaged in a violent clash with police forces on Friday. The protest was directed against a women's empowerment program that the demonstrators alleged was associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
Police Deployment and Detentions
As NSUI members prepared for their demonstration starting from 1 PM, authorities implemented heavy police deployment across the university campus. The main gates were barricaded to prevent unauthorized access. Despite these measures, protesters attempted to breach the barricades and advance toward the Humanities auditorium, where the contentious event was scheduled to take place.
During the ensuing scuffle, police detained several NSUI functionaries. Official reports from police officials indicate that approximately 30 university students were taken into custody during the protest. The detained individuals were subsequently removed from the scene as tensions escalated.
Controversial Event Details
The protest specifically targeted an event titled ‘Prabudh Jan Goshti (Matrushakti)', which translates to "Enlightened Public Discourse (Mother Power)". This program was held at the Humanities auditorium and organized by the Marudhar Nari Sashaktikaran Sangathan. The event featured an address by Ram Lal, who serves as the head of the RSS outreach wing, further fueling the controversy.
Political Reactions and Statements
NSUI Perspective: Amardeep Parihar, an NSUI leader, strongly criticized the university's decision to host such an event. "The university is a centre of knowledge and the atmosphere here is being compromised by hosting such events. The focus should be on academics, with discussions around employment opportunities and admissions," Parihar stated.
Congress Leadership Response: Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot took to social media platform X to express his support for the protesters. He wrote, "The NSUI's peaceful protest against imposition of RSS ideology at Rajasthan University — and against the undermining of the autonomy of educational institutions — stands as a symbol of the defence of democratic values. Arresting students to suppress such protests exposes the BJP govt's desperation and authoritarian mindset."
Adding to this, State Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra condemned the police action, stating, "The lathi-charge against NSUI functionaries at RU and their unlawful detention is a blatant abuse of power. The protesters were democratically raising their voice against RSS' political agenda. Are peaceful protests a crime in this country? The BJP govt wants to transform even these temples of learning into an arena for its authoritarianism and politics of hate."
Counterarguments from ABVP
In response to the protest, Bharat Bhushan, national coordinator (university wing) of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), defended the event's legitimacy. "Organising events associated with any ideology within the university is a democratic right. This particular event is centred on crucial themes such as women's dignity and empowerment, making any opposition to it unjustified," Bhushan asserted.
University Administration's Position
The university administration sought to distance itself from the controversy by clarifying its limited involvement. Officials stated that the Humanities auditorium was merely rented out to the organizing body, Marudhar Nari Sashaktikaran Sangathan, and that the university played no role in planning or conducting the event itself.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between student political groups and ideological organizations within educational institutions, raising questions about academic autonomy and the appropriate role of political activities on university campuses.
