Odisha Implements Early School Hours to Combat Rising Temperatures
In response to escalating daytime temperatures, the Odisha government has announced a significant rescheduling of class timings for all educational institutions across the state. Effective from Friday and continuing until the commencement of the summer vacation, both government and private schools will now operate from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM. This proactive measure, detailed in an official order issued on Thursday by the School and Mass Education Department, aims to safeguard students from the adverse effects of heatwave conditions.
Comprehensive Order Affects All School Types
The directive applies universally to government, government-aided, and privately-managed schools under the department's jurisdiction. According to the order, this timing adjustment will be enforced annually to preemptively address heat-related concerns. N Thirumala Naik, Secretary of the School and Mass Education Department, emphasized in a letter to all district collectors that after the summer vacation, schools will revert to their normal schedules as per earlier guidelines. However, district collectors retain the authority to reschedule timings in advance if local conditions necessitate such action.
Enhanced Safety Measures for Student Well-being
To further mitigate heatwave risks, the department has mandated several critical steps. Schools are required to ensure the availability of drinking water, with instructions to repair tubewells on campus where necessary. A daily drinking water break, signaled by a water bell at a fixed time, will be implemented. Additionally, schools must stock sufficient Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets for distribution to students or staff in need. Outdoor activities will be restricted to prevent exposure to extreme heat, prioritizing student safety.
Community Awareness and Parental Involvement
The order also highlights the importance of community engagement. Parents are to be sensitized to ensure their children carry water bottles to school, with widespread publicity campaigns planned to raise awareness. Schools are advised to allocate time during school hours to educate students on heatwave precautionary tips, fostering a culture of preparedness. These collective efforts underscore the government's commitment to creating a safe learning environment during periods of high temperature.
This initiative reflects a broader strategy to adapt educational practices to environmental challenges, ensuring that student health remains a top priority in Odisha's educational framework.
